भगवान गणेशजी को भारतीय धर्म और संस्कृति में प्रथम पूज्य देवता माना जाता है। उनकी पूजा के बगैर कोई भी मंगल कार्य शुरू नहीं होता। सभी मांगलिक कार्य में पहले गणेश जी की स्थापना और स्तुति की जाती है। आओ जानते हैं भगवान गणेशजी के संबंध में संपूर्ण परिचय।
माता पिता : भगवान शंकर और माता पार्वती।
गणेश जन्म : माता पार्वती द्वारा पुण्यक व्रत के फलस्वरूप गणेशजी का जन्म हुआ था। बाद के पुराणों में उनके जन्म के संबंध में कहा गया है माता ने अपनी सखी जया और विजया के कहने पर एक गण की उत्पति अपने मैल से की थी।

गणेशजी के 12 प्रमुख नाम : सुमुख, एकदंत, कपिल, गजकर्णक, लंबोदर, विकट, विघ्न-नाश, विनायक, धूम्रकेतु, गणाध्यक्ष, भालचंद्र, गजानन।
जन्म समय : भाद्रपद की चतुर्थी को मध्यान्ह के समय। जन्म समय माथुर ब्राह्मणों के इतिहास अनुसार अनुमानत: 9938 विक्रम संवत पूर्व भाद्रपद माह की शुक्ल चतुर्थी को मध्याह्न के समय हुआ था। पौराणिक मत के अनुसार सतुयग में हुआ था।
स्थान : कैलाश मानसरोवार या उत्तरकाशी जिले का डोडीताल।
भाई : श्रीकार्तिकेय (बड़े भाई), सुकेश, जलंधर, अयप्पा और भूमा।

ससुर : भगवान विश्वकर्मा
अधिपति : जल तत्व के अधिपति।
प्रिय पुष्प : लाल रंग के फूल।
प्रिय वस्तु : दुर्वा (दूब), शमी-पत्र।
प्रमुख अस्त्र : पाश और अंकुश।
गणेश वाहन : सिंह, मयूर और मूषक। सतयुग में सिंह, त्रेतायुग में मयूर, द्वापर युग में मूषक और कलियुग में घोड़ा है।
गणेशजी का जप मंत्र : ॐ गं गणपतये नम: है।
अवतार : पुराणों में उनके 64 अवतारों का वणर्न है। सतयुग में कश्यप व अदिति के यहां महोत्कट विनायक नाम से जन्म लेकर देवांतक और नरांतक का वध किया। त्रेतायुग में उन्होंने उमा के गर्भ जन्म लिया और उनका नाम गुणेश रखा गया। सिंधु नामक दैत्य का विनाश करने के बाद वे मयुरेश्वर नाम से विख्यात हुए। द्वापर में माता पार्वती के यहां पुन: जन्म लिया और वे गणेश कहलाए। ऋषि पराशर ने उनका पालन पोषण किया और उन्होंने वेदव्यास के विनय करने पर सशर्त महाभारत लिखी।

गणेश जी का मस्तक : उन्हें गजानन इसलिए कहा गया कि उनके सिर को भगवान शंकर ने काट दिया था। बाद में उनके धड़ पर हाथी का सिर लगा कर उन्हें पुन: जीवित किया गया। यह भी कहा जाता है कि शनिदेव जब बाल गणेश को देखने गए तो उनकी दृष्टि से उनका मस्तक भस्म हो गया था बाद में विष्णुजी ने एक हाथी का सिर उनके धड़ पर लगाकर उन्हें पुनर्जिवित कर दिया था।
अग्रपूजक कैसे बने : एक बार देवताओं में धरती की परिक्रमा की प्रतियोगिता हुई जिसमें जो सबसे पहले परिक्रमा करके आ जाता उसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ माना जाता। प्रतियोगिता प्रारंभ हुई परंतु गणेश जी का वाहन तो मूषक था तब उन्होंने अपनी बुद्धि का प्रयोग किया और उन्होंने अपने माता पिता शिव एवं पार्वती की ही परिक्रमा कर ली। ऐसा करके उन्होंने संपूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड की ही परिक्रमा कर ली। तब सभी देवों की सर्वसम्मति और ब्रह्माजी की अनुशंसा से उन्हें अग्रपूजक माना गया। इसके पीछे और भी कथाएं हैं। पंच देवोपासना में भगवान गणपति मुख्य हैं।
गणेशजी की पसंद : उनका प्रिय भोग मोदक लड्डू, प्रिय पुष्प लाल रंग के फूल, प्रिय वस्तु दुर्वा (दूब), प्रिय वृक्ष शमी-पत्र, केल, केला आदि हैं। केसरिया चंदन, अक्षत, दूर्वा अर्पित कर कपूर जलाकर उनकी पूजा और आरती की जाती है। उनको मोदक का लड्डू अर्पित किया जाता है। उन्हें रक्तवर्ण के पुष्प विशेष प्रिय हैं।
गणेशजी का स्वरूप : जल तत्व के अधिपति, बुधवार और चतुर्थी के स्वामी और केतु एवं बुध के ग्रहाधिपति गणेश जी के प्रभु अस्त्र पाश और अंकुश है। वे मूषक वाहन पर सवार रहते हैं। वे एकदन्त और चतुर्बाहु हैं। अपने चारों हाथों में वे क्रमश: पाश, अंकुश, मोदक पात्र तथा वरमुद्रा धारण करते हैं। वे रक्तवर्ण, लम्बोदर, शूर्पकर्ण तथा पीतवस्त्रधारी हैं। वे रक्त चंदन धारण करते हैं।
भगवान गणेशजी का सतयुग में वाहन सिंह है और उनकी भुजाएं 10 हैं तथा नाम विनायक। श्री गणेशजी का त्रेतायुग में वाहन मयूर है इसीलिए उनको मयूरेश्वर कहा गया है। उनकी भुजाएं 6 हैं और रंग श्वेत। द्वापरयुग में उनका वाहन मूषक है और उनकी भुजाएं 4 हैं। इस युग में वे गजानन नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं और उनका वर्ण लाल है। कलियुग में उनका वाहन घोड़ा है और वर्ण धूम्रवर्ण है। इनकी 2 भुजाएं हैं और इस युग में उनका नाम धूम्रकेतु है।
गणेशजी के जीवन से जुड़े महत्वपूर्ण प्रसंग : मस्तक प्रसंग, पृथ्वी प्रदक्षिणा प्रसंग, मूषक (गजमुख) वाहन प्राप्ति प्रसंग, गणेश विवाह प्रसंग, संतोषी माता उत्पत्ति प्रसंग, विष्णु विवाह में उन्हें नहीं बुलाने का प्रसंग, असुर (देवतान्तक, सिंधु दैत्य, सिंदुरासुर, मत्सरासुर, मदासुर, मोहासुर, कामासुर, लोभासुर, क्रोधासुर, ममासुर, अहंतासुर) वध प्रसंग, महाभारत लेखन प्रसंग आदि। उन्होंने अपने भाई कार्तिकेय के साथ कई युद्धों में लड़ाई की थी।
गणेश ग्रंथ : गणेश का गाणपतेय संप्रदाय है। उनके ग्रंथों में गणेश पुराण, गणेश चालीसा, गणेश स्तुति, श्रीगणेश सहस्रनामावली, गणेशजी की आरती, संकटनाशन गणेश स्तोत्र, गणपति अथर्वशीर्ष, गणेशकवच, संतान गणपति स्तोत्र, ऋणहर्ता गणपति स्तोत्र, मयूरेश स्तोत्र आदि।
