कैलिफ़ोर्निया में अपने 13 बच्चों को गैरक़ानूनी रूप से बिस्तर से बांध कर रखने और उन्हें भूखा रखने के दोषी दंपति को उनके बच्चों ने माफ़ कर दिया है। 13 बच्चों के माता-पिता डेविड और लुईस टर्पिन ने शुक्रवार को रिवरसाइड काउंटी की अदालत में अपना अपराध स्वीकार कर लिया।
इसके बाद अदालत ने इस दंपति को 25 साल की सज़ा दी है। उम्मीद है कि अब ये दंपति अपनी बाकी की ज़िंदगी जेल की सलाखों के पीछे गुजारेगी। इस दंपति को जनवरी 2018 में तब गिरफ़्तार किया गया था जब उनकी एक 17 साल की बेटी ने घर से भाग कर इसकी जानकारी दी।
टर्पिन दंपति कम-से-कम 9 वर्षों तक अपने 13 में से 12 बच्चों को यातना देने, दुर्व्यवहार करने और जंजीर से बांध कर रखने का दोषी पाया गया है। डेविड और लुईस के बच्चों ने कोर्ट से कहा कि वो तमाम दुर्व्यवहारों के बाद भी अपने माता-पिता से प्यार करते हैं।
बच्चों ने क्या कहा?
दंपति की एक बेटी के बयान को उसके भाई ने पढ़ा, "मैं अपने माता-पिता से बेहद प्यार करती हूं। यह हमें पालने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका नहीं था, लेकिन इन्होंने ही मुझे वह इंसान बनाया जो मैं आज हूं।"
डेविड टुर्पिन (56) और लुईस टुर्पिन (49) अपने बच्चों को बार-बार सज़ा देते और पीटते थे, इसके बाद बच्चों ने घर से भागने की योजना बनाई। दंपति के एक और बच्चे ने जो बताया उसकी आपबीती सुनकर रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।
उसने कहा, "मैं इसे शब्दों में बयां नहीं कर सकता कि मुझपर क्या बीती है। कभी कभी मुझे आज भी बुरे सपने आते हैं कि मेरे भाई-बहनों को जंजीर से बांध कर पीटा जाता था।"
"वह बीत चुका है और अब बस यही कहना चाहूंगा कि मैंने अपने माता-पिता को जो बहुत सी चीज़ें उन्होंने हमारे साथ कीं उसके लिए माफ़ कर दिया है।"
लेकिन सभी बच्चे इतने सुलझे हुए नहीं थे।
एक बेटी ने कहा, "मेरे माता-पिता ने मुझसे मेरी पूरी ज़िंदगी छीन ली, लेकिन अब मैं अपना जीवन वापस ले रही हूं। मैं मजबूत हूं, एक फ़ाइटर हूं, रॉकेट की तरह ज़िंदगी में आगे बढ़ रही हूं।"
उसने कहा, "मेरे पिता ने मेरी मां को बदल दिया, मैंने ऐसा होते देखा। उन्होंने मुझे लगभग बदल ही दिया था तभी मुझे यह अहसास हुआ कि आखिर हो क्या रहा है।"

माता-पिता ने क्या कहा?
कोर्ट में डेविड और लुईस ने रोते हुए अपने किये पर बच्चों से माफ़ी मांगी। पिता का बयान उनके वकील ने पढ़ा, इसमें लिखा था, "मैंने सही मंशा से घर पर शिक्षा देने और अनुशासन सिखाने की कोशिश की। मैंने कभी अपने बच्चों को हानि नहीं पहुंचाना चाहता था। मैं अपने बच्चों से प्यार करता हूं और मुझे लगता है कि मेरे बच्चे भी मुझसे प्यार करते हैं।"
डेविड अमरीका के प्रसिद्ध रक्षा उत्पादक लॉकहीड मार्टिन और नोर्थ्रोप ग्रुमैन में इंजीनियर रह चुके हैं। हाउसवाइफ़ लुईस ने कोर्ट में अपने किये पर माफ़ी मांगी और कहा, "मैं अपने बच्चों से बेहद प्यार करती हूं, मैं उम्मीद करती हूं कि मुझे उन्हें देखने, गले लगाने और उन्हें सॉरी बोलने का मौका मिलेगा।"
जज ने क्या कहा?
कोर्ट में जब जज ने उनके 'स्वार्थी, क्रूर और अमानवीय व्यवहार' की निन्दा की तो दंपति के चेहरे पर कोई भाव नहीं था। जज बर्नार्ड श्वार्ट्ज़ ने कहा, "आपने अपने बच्चों के साथ जो किया वो अब दुनिया के सामने है। आपको कम सज़ा दिए जाने का कारण मेरी नज़र में सिर्फ इतना है कि आपने शुरुआती दौर में ही इसकी ज़िम्मेदारी स्वीकार की है।"
"आपके हॉउस ऑफ़ हॉरर में बच्चों ने अपमान सहन किया और आपने उन्हें नुकसान पहुंचाया है।"
बच्चों ने क्या-क्या सहन किये?
लॉस एंजेलिस के बाहर दक्षिण में 112 किलोमीटर दूर साफ़-सुथरे इलाके में स्थित इस घर में जब प्रशासन के अधिकारी पहुंचे तो उन्हें चारों ओर गंदगी और बदबू फैली हुई मिली। पुलिस के छापे के दौरान घर में 2 से 29 साल के ये बच्चे बुरी तरह कुपोषित पाए गए।
दंपति का एक 22 वर्षीय लड़का बिस्तर से जंजीर से बंधा मिला। उसकी दो बहनों को कुछ समय पहले ही जंजीरों से आज़ाद किया गया था। पीड़ितों को साल में एक बार से अधिक नहाने की मनाही थी, वे शौचालय का उपयोग करने में असमर्थ थे और उनमें से किसी भी बच्चे को कभी दांत के डॉक्टर से नहीं दिखाया गया था। कुछ वयस्क भाई-बहनों का ग्रोथ इतनी कम थी कि अधिकारियों ने उन्हें पहली नज़र में बच्चा समझा।
मामला कैसे सामने आया?
एबीसी को दंपति की एक बेटी का 911 पर किए गए कॉल का ऑडियो मिला जिसमें उसने वहां रह रहे बच्चों की स्थिति का ज़िक्र किया था। इमरजेंसी ऑपरेटर को उसने बताया... "मेरी दो बहनें और एक भाई... बिस्तर में जंजीर से बंधे हैं।"
17 वर्षीय इस लड़की को अपने घर का पता तक मालूम नहीं था। उसने कहा, "कभी-कभी जब मैं सो कर जागती हूं तो ठीक से सांस तक नहीं ले पाती क्योंकि घर में बहुत बदबू आती है।"
उस लड़की को महीने और साल तक का पता नहीं था और न ही वो 'मेडिकेशन' यानी 'चिकित्सा' शब्द का मतलब ही जानती थी। इन सभी बच्चों का नाम अंग्रेज़ी का वर्ण 'जे' से शुरू होता है। इन्हें घर में ही रखा जाता था, लेकिन हैलोवीन, डिज़नीलैंड और लास वेगास के फैमिली ट्रिप पर ले जाया गया था। नर्सों, मनोवैज्ञानिकों समेत देश भर के क़रीब 20 लोगों ने इन सात वयस्क भाई-बहनों और छह बच्चों की देखभाल की पेशकश की है।
