भगवान शिव अद्भुत व अविनाशी हैं। भगवान शिव जितने सरल हैं, उतने ही रहस्यमयी भी हैं। भोलेनाथ का रहन-सहन, आवास, गण आदि सभी देवताओं से एकदम अलग हैं। शास्त्रों में एक ओर जहां सभी देवी-देवताओं को सुंदर वस्त्र और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित बताया गया है, वहीं दूसरी ओर भगवान शिव का रूप निराला ही बताया गया है। शिवजी सदैव मृगचर्म (हिरण की खाल) धारण किए रहते हैं और शरीर पर भस्म (राख) लगाए रहते हैं।
शिवजी का प्रमुख वस्त्र भस्म यानी राख है, क्योंकि उनका पूरा शरीर भस्म से ढंका रहता है। शिवपुराण के अनुसार भस्म सृष्टि का सार है, एक दिन संपूर्ण सृष्टि इसी राख के रूप में परिवर्तित हो जानी है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि चारों युग (त्रेता युग, सत युग, द्वापर युग और कलियुग) के बाद इस सृष्टि का विनाश हो जाता है और पुन: सृष्टि की रचना ब्रह्माजी द्वारा की जाती है। यह क्रिया अनवरत चलती रहती है। इस सृष्टि के सार भस्म यानी राख को शिवजी सदैव धारण किए रहते हैं। इसका यही अर्थ है कि एक दिन यह संपूर्ण सृष्टि शिवजी में विलीन हो जानी है।
शिवपुराण के लिए अनुसार भस्म तैयार करने के लिए कपिला गाय के गोबर से बने कंडे, शमी, पीपल, पलाश, बड़, अमलतास और बेर के वृक्ष की लकड़ियों को एक साथ जलाया जाता है। इस दौरान उचित मंत्रोच्चार किए जाते हैं। इन चीजों को जलाने पर जो भस्म प्राप्त होती है, उसे कपड़े से छान लिया जाता है। इस प्रकार तैयार की गई भस्म शिवजी को अर्पित की जाती है।
ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस प्रकार तैयार की गई भस्म को यदि कोई इंसान भी धारण करता है तो वह सभी सुख-सुविधाएं प्राप्त करता है। शिवपुराण के अनुसार ऐसी भस्म धारण करने से व्यक्ति का आकर्षण बढ़ता है, समाज में मान-सम्मान प्राप्त होता है। अत: शिवजी को अर्पित की गई भस्म का तिलक लगाना चाहिए।
जिस प्रकार भस्म यानी राख से कई प्रकार की वस्तुएं शुद्ध और साफ की जाती है, ठीक उसी प्रकार यदि हम भी शिवजी को अर्पित की गई भस्म का तिलक लगाएंगे तो अक्षय पुण्य की प्राप्ति होगी और कई जन्मों के पापों से मुक्ति मिल जाएगी।
भस्म की यह विशेषता होती है कि यह शरीर के रोम छिद्रों को बंद कर देती है। इसे शरीर पर लगाने से गर्मी में गर्मी और सर्दी में सर्दी नहीं लगती। भस्म, त्वचा संबंधी रोगों में भी दवा का काम भी करती है। शिवजी का निवास कैलाश पर्वत पर बताया गया है, जहां का वातावरण एकदम प्रतिकूल है। इस प्रतिकूल वातावरण को अनुकूल बनाने में भस्म महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। भस्म धारण करने वाले शिव संदेश देते हैं कि परिस्थितियों के अनुसार स्वयं को ढाल लेना चाहिए। जहां जैसे हालात बनते हैं, हमें भी स्वयं को उसी के अनुरूप बना लेना चाहिए।

क्यों लगाते हैं भोलेनाथ शरीर पर भस्म, कैसे बनती है भस्मार्ती की भस्म
भगवान शिव ने अपने तन पर जो भस्म रमाई है वह उनकी पत्नी सती की चिता की भस्म थी जो कि अपने पिता द्वारा भगवान शिव के अपमान से आहत हो वहां हो रहे यज्ञ के हवनकुंड में कूद गई थी। भगवान शिव को जब इसका पता चला तो वे बहुत बेचैन हो गये। जलते कुंड से सती के शरीर को निकालकर प्रलाप करते हुए ब्रह्माण्ड में घूमते रहे। उनके क्रोध व बेचैनी से सृष्टि खतरे में पड़ गई।
जहां जहां सती के अंग गिरे वहां शक्तिपीठ की स्थापना हो गई। पिर भी शिव का संताप जारी रहा। तब श्री हरि ने सती के शरीर को भस्म में परिवर्तित कर दिया। शिव विरह की अग्नि में भस्म को ही उनकी अंतिम निशानी के तौर पर तन पर लगा लिया।
पहले भगवान श्री हरि ने देवी सती के शरीर को छिन्न भिन्न कर दिया था। जहां जहां उनके अंग गिरे वहीं शक्तिपीठों की स्थापना हुई। लेकिन पुराणों में भस्म का विवरण भी मिलता है।
भगवान शिव के तन पर भस्म रमाने का एक रहस्य यह भी है कि राख विरक्ति का प्रतीक है। भगवान शिव चूंकि बहुत ही लौकिक देव लगते हैं। कथाओं के माध्यम से उनका रहन-सहन एक आम सन्यासी सा लगता है। एक ऐसे ऋषि सा जो गृहस्थी का पालन करते हुए मोह माया से विरक्त रहते हैं और संदेश देते हैं कि अंत काल सब कुछ राख हो जाना है।
एक रहस्य यह भी हो सकता है चूंकि भगवान शिव को विनाशक भी माना जाता है। ब्रह्मा जहां सृष्टि की निर्माण करते हैं तो विष्णु पालन-पोषण लेकिन जब सृष्टि में नकारात्मकता बढ़ जाती है तो भगवान शिव विध्वंस कर डालते हैं। विध्वंस यानि की समाप्ति और भस्म इसी अंत इसी विध्वंस की प्रतीक भी है। शिव हमेशा याद दिलाते रहते हैं कि पाप के रास्ते पर चलना छोड़ दें अन्यथा अंत में सब राख ही होगा।
महाकाल की भस्मार्ती
उज्जैन स्थित महाकालेश्वर की भस्मार्ती विश्व भर में प्रसिद्ध है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि वर्षों पहले श्मशान भस्म से भूतभावन भगवान महाकाल की भस्म आरती होती थी लेकिन अब यह परंपरा खत्म हो चुकी है और अब कंडे की भस्म से आरती-श्रृंगार किया जा रहा है। वर्तमान में महाकाल की भस्म आरती में कपिला गाय के गोबर से बने औषधियुक्त उपलों में शमी, पीपल, पलाश, बड़, अमलतास और बेर की लकड़ियों को जलाकर बनाई भस्म का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
जलते कंडे में जड़ीबूटी और कपूर-गुगल की मात्रा इतनी डाली जाती है कि यह भस्म ना सिर्फ सेहत की दृष्टि से उपयुक्त होती है बल्कि स्वाद में भी लाजवाब हो जाती है। श्रौत, स्मार्त और लौकिक ऐसे तीन प्रकार की भस्म कही जाती है। श्रुति की विधि से यज्ञ किया हो वह भस्म श्रौत है, स्मृति की विधि से यज्ञ किया हो वह स्मार्त भस्म है तथा कण्डे को जलाकर भस्म तैयार की हो वह लौकिक भस्म है।
शिव का शरीर पर भस्म लपेटने का दार्शनिक अर्थ यही है कि यह शरीर जिस पर हम घमंड करते हैं, जिसकी सुविधा और रक्षा के लिए ना जाने क्या-क्या करते हैं एक दिन इसी इस भस्म के समान हो जाएगा। शरीर क्षणभंगुर है और आत्मा अनंत।
कई सन्यासी तथा नागा साधु पूरे शरीर पर भस्म लगाते हैं। यह भस्म उनके शरीर की कीटाणुओं से तो रक्षा करता ही है तथा सब रोम कूपों को ढंककर ठंड और गर्मी से भी राहत दिलाती है।
रोम कूपों के ढंक जाने से शरीर की गर्मी बाहर नहीं निकल पाती इससे शीत का अहसास नहीं होता और गर्मी में शरीर की नमी बाहर नहीं होती। इससे गर्मी से रक्षा होती है। मच्छर, खटमल आदि जीव भी भस्म रमे शरीर से दूर रहते हैं।
