1.पुरी स्थित जगन्नाथ मंदिर भारत के चार पवित्र धामों में से एक है। वर्त्तमान मंदिर 800 वर्ष से अधिक प्राचीन है, जिसमें भगवान श्रीकृष्ण, जगन्नाथ रूप में विराजित है। साथ ही यहां उनके बड़े भाई बलराम (बलभद्र या बलदेव) और उनकी बहन देवी सुभद्रा की पूजा की जाती है।

3.बलरामजी के रथ को 'तालध्वज' कहते हैं, जिसका रंग लाल और हरा होता है। देवी सुभद्रा के रथ को 'दर्पदलन' या ‘पद्म रथ’ कहा जाता है, जो काले या नीले और लाल रंग का होता है, जबकि भगवान जगन्नाथ के रथ को ' नंदीघोष' या 'गरुड़ध्वज' कहते हैं। इसका रंग लाल और पीला होता है।
4.भगवान जगन्नाथ का नंदीघोष रथ 45.6 फीट ऊंचा, बलरामजी का तालध्वज रथ 45 फीट ऊंचा और देवी सुभद्रा का दर्पदलन रथ 44.6 फीट ऊंचा होता है।
5.सभी रथ नीम की पवित्र और परिपक्व काष्ठ (लकड़ियों) से बनाए जाते हैं, जिसे ‘दारु’ कहते हैं। इसके लिए नीम के स्वस्थ और शुभ पेड़ की पहचान की जाती है, जिसके लिए जगन्नाथ मंदिर एक खास समिति का गठन करती है।

6.इन रथों के निर्माण में किसी भी प्रकार के कील या कांटे या अन्य किसी धातु का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। रथों के लिए काष्ठ का चयन बसंत पंचमी के दिन से शुरू होता है और उनका निर्माण अक्षय तृतीया से प्रारम्भ होता है।
7. जब तीनों रथ तैयार हो जाते हैं, तब 'छर पहनरा' नामक अनुष्ठान संपन्न किया जाता है। इसके तहत पुरी के गजपति राजा पालकी में यहां आते हैं और इन तीनों रथों की विधिवत पूजा करते हैं और ‘सोने की झाड़ू’ से रथ मण्डप और रास्ते को साफ़ करते हैं।
8. आषाढ़ माह की शुक्लपक्ष की द्वितीया तिथि को रथयात्रा आरम्भ होती है। ढोल, नगाड़ों, तुरही और शंखध्वनि के बीच भक्तगण इन रथों को खींचते हैं। कहते हैं, जिन्हें रथ को खींचने का अवसर प्राप्त होता है, वह महाभाग्यवान माना जाता है। पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार, रथ खींचने वाले को मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है।

9. जगन्नाथ मंदिर से रथयात्रा शुरू होकर पुरी नगर से गुजरते हुए ये रथ गुंडीचा मंदिर पहुंचते हैं। यहां भगवान जगन्नाथ, बलभद्र और देवी सुभद्रा सात दिनों के लिए विश्राम करते हैं। गुंडीचा मंदिर में भगवान जगन्नाथ के दर्शन को ‘आड़प-दर्शन’ कहा जाता है।
10. गुंडीचा मंदिर को 'गुंडीचा बाड़ी' भी कहते हैं। यह भगवान की मौसी का घर है। इस मंदिर के बारे में पौराणिक मान्यता है कि यहीं पर देवशिल्पी विश्वकर्मा ने भगवान जगन्नाथ, बलभद्र और देवी की प्रतिमाओं का निर्माण किया था।
11. कहते हैं कि रथयात्रा के तीसरे दिन यानी पंचमी तिथि को देवी लक्ष्मी, भगवान जगन्नाथ को ढूंढते हुए यहां आती हैं। तब द्वैतापति दरवाज़ा बंद कर देते हैं, जिससे देवी लक्ष्मी रुष्ट होकर रथ का पहिया तोड़ देती है और ‘हेरा गोहिरी साही पुरी’ नामक एक मुहल्ले में, जहां देवी लक्ष्मी का मंदिर है, वहां लौट जाती हैं।
12. बाद में भगवान जगन्नाथ द्वारा रुष्ट देवी लक्ष्मी मनाने की परंपरा भी है। यह मान-मनौवल संवादों के माध्यम से आयोजित किया जाता है, जो एक अद्भुत भक्ति रस उत्पन्न करती है।
13. आषाढ़ माह के दसवें दिन सभी रथ पुन: मुख्य मंदिर की ओर प्रस्थान करते हैं। रथों की वापसी की इस यात्रा की रस्म को बहुड़ा यात्रा कहते हैं।
14. जगन्नाथ मंदिर वापस पहुंचने के बाद भी सभी प्रतिमाएं रथ में ही रहती हैं। देवी-देवताओं के लिए मंदिर के द्वार अगले दिन एकादशी को खोले जाते हैं, तब विधिवत स्नान करवा कर वैदिक मंत्रोच्चार के बीच देव विग्रहों को पुनः प्रतिष्ठित किया जाता है।
15 वास्तव में रथयात्रा एक सामुदायिक आनुष्ठानिक पर्व है। इस अवसर पर घरों में कोई भी पूजा नहीं होती है और न ही किसी प्रकार का उपवास रखा जाता है। एक अहम् बात यह कि रथयात्रा के दौरान यहां किसी प्रकार का जातिभेद देखने को नहीं मिलता है।
समुद्र किनारे बसे पुरी नगर में होने वाली जगन्नाथ रथयात्रा उत्सव के समय आस्था और विश्वास का जो भव्य वैभव और विराट प्रदर्शन देखने को मिलता है, वह दुनिया में और कहीं दुर्लभ है।
