दोस्ती अलग : प्यार अलग
सभ्य, सुसंस्कृत, कुलीन इस अभिनेता ने रंगीन और रंगहीन (श्वेत-श्याम) सिनेमा के पर्दे पर अपने आपको कई रूपों में प्रस्तुत किया। असफल प्रेमी के रूप में उन्होंने विशेष ख्याति पाई, लेकिन यह भी सिद्ध किया कि हास्य भूमिकाओं में वे किसी से कम नहीं हैं। वे ट्रेजेडी किंग भी कहलाए और ऑलराउंडर भी। उनकी गिनती अतिसंवेदनशील कलाकारों में की जाती है, लेकिन दिल और दिमाग के सामंजस्य के साथ उन्होंने अपने व्यक्तित्व और जीवन को ढाला।
वे अपने आप में सेल्फमेडमैन (स्वनिर्मित मनुष्य) की जीती-जागती मिसाल थे। उनकी 'प्राइवेट लाइफ' हमेशा कौतुहल का विषय रही, जिसमें रोजमर्रा के सुख-दुःख, उतार-चढ़ाव, मिलना-बिछुड़ना, इकरार-तकरार सभी शामिल थे। ईश्वर-भीरू दिलीप कुमार को साहित्य, संगीत और दर्शन की अभिरुचि ने गंभीर और प्रभावशाली हस्ती बना दिया।
पच्चीस वर्ष की उम्र में दिलीप कुमार देश के नंबर वन अभिनेता के रूप में स्थापित हो गए थे। वह आजादी का उदयकाल था। शीघ्र ही राजकपूर और देव आनंद के आगमन से 'दिलीप-राज-देव' की प्रसिद्ध त्रिमूर्ति का निर्माण हुआ। ये नए चेहरे आम सिने दर्शकों को मोहक लगे। इनसे पूर्व के अधिकांश हीरो प्रौढ़ नजर आते थे- सुरेंद्र, प्रेम अदीब, मोतीलाल आदि।
दिलीप कुमार प्रतिष्ठित फिल्म निर्माण संस्था बॉम्बे टॉकिज की उपज हैं, जहाँ देविका रानी ने उन्हें काम और नाम दिया। यहीं वे यूसुफ सरवर खान से दिलीप कुमार बने और यहीं उन्होंने अभिनय का ककहरा सीखा। अशोक कुमार और शशधर मुखर्जी ने फिल्मीस्तान की फिल्मों में लेकर दिलीप कुमार के करियर को सही दिशा में आगे बढ़ाया।
फिर नौशाद, मेहबूब, बिमल राय, के. आसिफ तथा दक्षिण के एसएस वासन ने दिलीप की प्रतिभा का दोहन कर क्लासिक फिल्में देश को दीं। 44 साल की उम्र में अभिनेत्री सायरा बानो से विवाह करने तक दिलीप कुमार वे सब फिल्में कर चुके थे, जिनके लिए आज उन्हें याद किया जाता है। बाद में दिलीप कुमार ने कभी काम और कभी विश्राम की कार्यशैली अपनाई। वैसे वे इत्मीनान से काम करने के पक्षधर शुरू से थे। अपनी प्रतिष्ठा और लोकप्रियता को दिलीप कुमार ने पैसा कमाने के लिए कभी नहीं भुनाया। एक बड़े परिवार के संचालन की जिम्मेदारी उन पर थी।
मान-सम्मान के महानायक
आज ज्यादातर लोगों को इस बात पर आश्चर्य होता है कि इस महानायक ने सिर्फ 54 फिल्में क्यों की। लेकिन इसका उत्तर है दिलीप कुमार ने अपनी इमेज का सदैव ध्यान रखा और अभिनय स्तर को कभी गिरने नहीं दिया। इसलिए वे अभिनय के पारसमणि (टचस्टोन) बने हुए थे जबकि धूम-धड़ाके के साथ कई सुपर स्टार, मेगा स्टार आए और आकर चले गए।
दिलीप कुमार ने अभिनय के माध्यम से राष्ट्र की जो सेवा की, उसके लिए भारत सरकार ने उन्हें 1991 में पद्मभूषण की उपाधि से नवाजा था और 1995 में फिल्म का सर्वोच्च राष्ट्रीय सम्मान 'दादा साहब फालके अवॉर्ड' भी प्रदान किया। पाकिस्तान सरकार ने भी उन्हें 1997 में 'निशान-ए-इम्तियाज' से नवाजा था, जो पाकिस्तान का सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान है।
1953 में फिल्म फेयर पुरस्कारों के श्रीगणेश के साथ दिलीप कुमार को फिल्म 'दाग' के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का पुरस्कार दिया था। अपने जीवनकाल में दिलीप कुमार कुल आठ बार फिल्म फेयर से सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का पुरस्कार पा चुके हैं और यह एक कीर्तिमान है जिसे अभी तक तोड़ा नहीं जा सका। अंतिम बार उन्हें सन् 1982 में फिल्म 'शक्ति' के लिए यह इनाम दिया गया था, जबकि फिल्म फेयर ने ही उन्हें 1993 में राज कपूर की स्मृति में लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट अवॉर्ड दिया।
फिल्म फेयर ने जिन छह अन्य फिल्मों के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का पुरस्कार दिया वे हैं आजाद (1955), देवदास (1956), नया दौर (1957), कोहिनूर (1960), लीडर (1964) तथा राम और श्याम (1967)। 1997 में उन्हें भारतीय सिनेमा के बहुमूल्य योगदान देने के लिए एनटी रामाराव अवॉर्ड दिया गया, जबकि 1998 में समाज कल्याण के क्षेत्र में योगदान के लिए रामनाथ गोयनका अवॉर्ड दिया गया।

अभिनेता दिलीप कुमार उर्फ यूसुफ खान का जन्म पेशावर के एक पठान परिवार में हुआ था। पठान शब्द फतेहमान (यानी विजेता) का बिगड़ा हुआ रूप है। राज कपूर भी पेशावर के पठान थे। यूसुफ के पिता मोहम्मद सरवर खान फलों के व्यापारी थे और कोलकाता, मुंबई आया-जाया करते थे। यूसुफ की माता का नाम आयशा बेगम था। इस दंपति को कुल छह पुत्र और छह पुत्रियों की प्राप्ति हुई जिनमें से कुछ बच्चे मुंबई और देवलाली (नासिक) में पैदा हुए। पेशावर में सरवर खान का परिवार खुदादाद मोहल्ले में रहता था, जहाँ उनकी पुश्तैनी जमीन अभी भी है। बचपन में घर में सख्त अनुशासन का माहौल था।
यूसुफ अपने माता-पिता के तीसरे पुत्र थे। दो बड़े भाइयों के नाम नूर मोहम्मद और अय्यूब थे। दूसरा पुत्र अय्यूब ही परिवार के पेशावर से मुंबई आने का कारण बना। वह घोड़े से गिर जाने के कारण इतना जख्मी हुआ था कि उसे मुंबई लाना पड़ा। उसकी रीढ़ की हड्डी टूट गई थी। बेबस अय्यूब घर में बैठकर ही अध्ययन करता रहा और उसने धर्म और साहित्य के प्रति यूसुफ को जागरूक बनाया।
दिलीप कुमार को पेशावर की कड़कड़ाती, चमड़ी छील देने वाली सर्दी की याद थी। दीवान और कोठा, चटाई और नमदे, गुलाबी चाय और पेशावरी कुलचे, रोगिनी-रोटी या हलीम भी याद है। पेशावर के घर में हिंडको भाषा बोली जाती थी, जो प्राय: उर्दू और फारसी का मिश्रण थी। पश्तो सभी बच्चों को पढ़ाई जाती थी। घर के सब लोग पश्तो पढ़ना-लिखना जानते थे, लेकिन यूसुफ लिखना नहीं सीखे। दादा हाजी मोहम्मद फारसी जानते थे और शायरी के शौकीन थे। यानी घर का माहौल उजाड़ किस्म का नहीं था, जैसा कि आम अफगानियों के बारे में समझा जाता है।
घर के पास ही मस्जिद के अहाते में मदरसा था, जहाँ यूसुफ भी अपने बड़े भाई नूर मोहम्मद और अय्यूब के साथ जाया करते थे। पास ही एक मजार थी और बेर की झाड़ियाँ भी दूर नहीं थीं। ऐसे ही एक बार बेर खाते समय उसने दो नौजवानों को खूनी लड़ाई लड़ते देखा था और डरकर भाग आया था। बचपन में ही उसने दो शिया लड़कों की हत्या की घटना भी देखी थी और अम्मा के पीछे-पीछे वह घटना वाले घर में चला गया था, जहाँ पुलिस आई थी और डरकर यूसुफ एक पलंग के नीचे छिप गया था। पुलिस ने लाश वाले कमरे को बाहर से बंद कर दिया था और यूसुफ दोनों लाशों के साथ कमरे में अकेला रह गया था। उस रात का हॉरर दिलीप कुमार को अभी भी याद है।
साहित्य से सरोकार
यूसुफ पर अपने बड़े भाई अय्यूब का गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा। अय्यूब ज्ञानी और कवि था। उसके पास अँगरेजी साहित्य की अनेक पुस्तकें थीं। इस कारण यूसुफ को शेक्सपीयर, बर्नार्ड शॉ, मोपासाँ, डिकेंस आदि को पढ़ने का मौका मिला और साहित्य के प्रति उसके मन में अनुराग पैदा हुआ। जब अय्यूब 12 साल का था, तब अपने बड़े भाई नूर मोहम्मद के साथ फलों की खरीदी के लिए कश्मीर गया था। वहाँ वह घोड़े से गिर पड़ा और उसकी रीढ़ की हड्डी टूटने के साथ ही किडनी भी खराब हो गई।
इसी दुर्घटना के कारण दिलीप कुमार के परिवार को मुंबई शिफ्ट होना पड़ा और जब मुंबई की जलवायु उसके उपचार के प्रतिकूल पाई तो सरवर खान ने परिवार को देवलाली में रखा। पहले वे किराए के मकान में रहे और बाद में बंगला बनाया। यूसुफ ने देवलाली में बर्नेस और मुस्लिम बोर्डिंग स्कूल में पढ़ाई की। बीमार अय्यूब ने घर में रहकर ही पढ़ाई की। 16 साल की उम्र में अय्यूब ने नासिक में पैगम्बर मोहम्मद के जीवन पर एक सभा में 45 मिनट तक भाषण दिया और उसकी खूब सराहना हुई। अय्यूब की देखादेखी ही यूसुफ ने कुरआन में गहन दिलचस्पी दिखाई और अँगरेजी साहित्य को भी खंगाल मारा।
सरवर खान देवलाली और मुंबई के बीच आवाजाही किया करते थे। परिवार घर में प्रसन्न था। लेकिन दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध के समय देवलाली को फौजी स्टेशन घोषित कर दिया गया और यहाँ की सारी इमारतें सरकार ने अपने कब्जे में ले लीं। खान परिवार को भी अपना बंगला छोड़कर मुंबई आना पड़ा। पहले तो उसने बांद्रा में पाली माला रोड पर एक मकान किराए पर लिया, जो दिलीप कुमार के पाली हिल रोड स्थित बंगले से बहुत दूर नहीं है। मुंबई में यूसुफ और उसके छोटे भाई नासिर ने अंजुमन इस्लामिया स्कूल में दाखिला लिया, जहाँ दोनों भाइयों ने मुकरी (हास्य कलाकार) की दोस्ती पाई।
इस स्कूल से यूसुफ ने हाईस्कूल की परीक्षा प्रथम श्रेणी में उत्तीर्ण की। इसके बाद यूसुफ की दिलचस्पी अँगरेजी और उर्दू साहित्य की पढ़ाई करने में थी, लेकिन पिता के आदेश पर उन्होंने विज्ञान स्नातक होने के लिए विल्सन कॉलेज में दाखिला लेकर बॉटनी, जूलाजी और मैथ्सप पढ़ना शुरू किया। इस कॉलेज में उसे फुटबॉल खेलने का अवसर नहीं मिला तो यूसुफ ने खालसा कॉलेज में दाखिला ले लिया। स्कूल और कॉलेज की पढ़ाई के दौरान फुटबॉल यूसुफ का पहला प्यार था। अपने कॉलेज के दिनों में वह एक लोकप्रिय खिलाड़ी था। आसपास के सिख टैक्सी ड्राइवर उसका खेल देखकर बहुत खुश होते थे। वे अपने इस प्रिय फुटबॉलर को यूसुफ शाहजी कहकर पुकारा करते। यूसुफ एक स्थानीय क्लब बॉम्बे मुस्लिम्स की तरफ से भी फुटबॉल खेलता था। उसका दूसरा प्रिय खेल क्रिकेट था।
देविका रानी से मुलाकात
पिता के व्यवसाय में घाटा हो जाने के कारण यूसुफ को कॉलेज की पढ़ाई अधूरी छोड़नी पड़ी। उन्होंने पुणे के फौजी कैंटीन में मामूली नौकरी कर ली और फलों का व्यवसाय भी जारी रखा। अँगरेजी आती थी इसलिए वे ब्रिटिश सैनिकों में घुलमिल गए और उनके साथ फुटबॉल भी खेलने लगे। वे बहुत खुशनुमा दिन थे। वे कमा रहे थे और घर पैसे भी भेज रहे थे। यहीं उन्हें एक महाराष्ट्रीयन लड़की से प्रेम हुआ। छह महीने बाद वे पुणे से मुंबई लौट आए। यह 1943 का साल था। मुंबई में यूसुफ अपने पिता के व्यवसाय को फिर से शुरू करने की सोच ही रहे थे कि अब्बा ने उन्हें राय-मशविरे के लिए पारिवारिक मित्र डॉ. मसानी के पास भेजा।
डॉ. मसानी को पता था कि यूसुफ की उर्दू अच्छी है और साहित्य में भी उनकी रुचि है, इसलिए उन्होंने उन्हें देविका रानी से मिलने की सलाह दी जो उन दिनों बॉम्बे टॉकिज का संचालन कर रही थीं। बॉम्बे टॉकिज उन दिनों प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्माण संस्था थी। डॉ. मसानी देविका रानी के भी पारिवारिक चिकित्सक थे। यूसुफ ने देविका रानी से भेंट की और रायटर (लेखक) के रूप में रखने का अनुरोध किया, लेकिन यूसुफ की शक्ल को देखकर उन्होंने उन्हें एक हजार रुपए प्रतिमाह पर अभिनेता के रूप में नियुक्ति दे दी। देविका रानी ने ही यूसुफ खान को अपना फिल्मी नाम दिलीप कुमार रखने की सलाह दी थी।
झूठ बोले : कौआ नहीं काटा!
यूसुफ खान ने जब बॉम्बे टॉकिज में काम शुरू किया तो अपने अब्बा को नहीं बताया कि एक्टर बन गया हूँ। सरवर खान फिल्मी लोगों के बारे में अच्छेप विचार नहीं रखते थे। उनका फिल्मी नाम दिलीपकुमार रखा गया तो उन्होंने राहत महसूस की। उन्होंने बताया कि मैं ग्लैक्सो कंपनी में काम करता हूँ। पिता ने तुरंत खुश होकर आदेश दिया कि नियमित रूप से ग्लैक्सो कंपनी के बिस्किट घर में आते रहना चाहिए। क्योंकि द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध की वजह से खाद्यान्न का बड़ा टोटा था और परिवार बड़ा था। इससे दिलीप कुमार एक नई मुसीबत में फँस गए।
ऐसे में कॉलेज का एक मित्र काम आया, जो शहर में जहाँ भी ग्लैक्सो बिस्किट मिलते, इकट्ठेम करके पार्सल दिलीप तक पहुँचा देता। दिलीप स्टूडियो से घर लौटते समय खोका कुछ इस तरह ले जाते मानो माल सीधे फैक्टरी से चला आ रहा है। लेकिन एक दिन राजकपूर के दादा दीवान बशेशरनाथ ने भांडा फोड़ ही दिया, जिन्हें सरवर खान 'कंजर' कहकर ताना मारते थे, क्योंकि उनका बेटा पृथ्वीराज फिल्मों में काम करता था। एक दिन बशेशरनाथ फिल्म 'ज्वारभाटा' का पोस्टर लेकर ही क्राफोर्ड मार्केट की दुकान पर पहुँच गए और यूसुफ का चित्र दिखाया। सरवर ने कहा, लगता तो यूसुफ जैसा ही है। दीवानजी ने फरमाया, यूसुफ ही है। अब तू भी कंजर हो गया। कुछ समय नाराज रहने के बाद उन्होंने यूसुफ को माफ कर दिया।
दिलीप कुमार की फिल्म 'शहीद' उन्होंने परिवार के साथ बैठकर देखी थी और फिल्म उन्हें पसंद आई थी। फिल्म का अंत देखकर उनकी आँखों में आँसू आ गए थे और उन्होंने यूसुफ से कहा था कि आगे से अंत में मौत देने वाली फिल्में मत करना। इत्तफाक देखिए कि दिलीप कुमार ने फिल्मों में जितने मृत्यु दृश्य किए हैं, उतने किसी अन्य भारतीय अभिनेता ने नहीं दिए। यही नहीं, वे हिन्दी सिनेमा में 'ट्रेजेडी-किंग' कहलाए।
दोस्ती अलग : प्यार अलग
फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में प्रेम प्रकरणों और सेक्स स्कैंडलों की कभी कोई कमी नहीं रही, लेकिन आजादी के पहले दो-तीन दशकों में, जिसे स्वर्ण युग कहा जाता है, परिस्थितियाँ बहुत भिन्न थीं। मध्यवर्गीय नैतिकता का पालन अनिवार्य था। दिलीप कुमार उस युग के नंबर एक हीरो थे। उनका व्यक्तित्व सलोना था। स्वभाव से वे रोमांटिक थे और कोर्टशिप में माहिर। इस मामले में दिलीप की नफासत को उनकी फिल्मों के प्रणय दृश्यों में देखा जा सकता है। मीना कुमारी और नरगिस से दिलीप के दोस्ताना ताल्लुकात थे। वैजयंतीमाला और वहीदा रहमान के साथ भी फिल्मों में उनकी भागीदारी अच्छी निभी, लेकिन अगर प्रामाणिक दृष्टि से देखा जाए तो दो अभिनेत्रियों से दिलीप कुमार ने सचमुच प्यार किया। वे थीं कामिनी कौशल और मधुबाला। 1948 और 50 के बीच दिलीप-कामिनी ने चार फिल्मों में साथ काम किया था। इनमें 'शहीद' के अलावा अन्य तीन फिल्में 'नदिया के पार', 'शबनम', और 'आरजू' थीं। दर्शकों को इन फिल्मों के प्रणय दृश्य देखकर ही इनके बीच परस्पर प्रेम का अहसास हो जाता था।
तब कामिनी कौशल और दिलीप कुमार दोनों ही फिल्मी करियर की बुनियाद डाल रहे थे। कामिनी कौशल ब्याहता थीं। उनका वास्तविक नाम उमा कश्यप था। वे लाहौर के रायबहादुर डॉ. शिवराम कश्यप की पुत्री थीं और बड़ी बहन की असामयिक मृत्यु के कारण अपनी भतीहजियों के भविष्य की खातिर जीजा ब्रह्मस्वरूप सूद से विवाह करके मुंबई आ गई थीं। सूद पोर्ट ट्रस्ट में काम करते थे। उन्होंने कामिनी को फिल्मों में काम करने की आजादी दे रखी थी, लेकिन प्रेम की इजाजत भला कैसे देते। दोनों ने अपने प्रेम को दबाया और वर्षों तक एक-दूसरे के सामने भी नहीं आए।
मधुबाला और दिलीप कुमार के प्यार की दास्तान तो जगजाहिर थी। मधुबाला-दिलीप कुमार ने एक साथ सिर्फ चार फिल्में की। इनमें 'मुगल-ए-आजम' (1960) उनकी अंतिम फिल्म है, जिसे लोग इन दोनों की प्रेम कहानी के रूप में ही देखना पसंद करते हैं। मधुबाला भी दिलीप कुमार की तरह भावुक हृदय थीं। उनका मूल नाम मुमताज जहाँ देहलवी था। वे अपने पिता पठान अताउल्लाह की ग्यारह संतानों में से एक थीं और परिवार का गुजारा चलाने के वास्ते फिल्मों में काम करने के लिए मुंबई लाई गई थीं। 1941 में सिर्फ आठ साल की उम्र में उन्होंने फिल्मों में काम शुरू किया था और वे आजाद भारत में नवोदित अभिनेत्री के रूप में उभरीं।
मधुबाला सन् 1951 से 60 के बीच कुल 4 फिल्मों में दिलीप कुमार की नायिका बनीं - तराना, संगदिल, अमर और मुगल-ए-आजम। इनके प्रेम संबंधों के टूटने का कारण भी दिलीप कुमार (और बी.आर. चोपड़ा) की फिल्म 'नया दौर' बनी। मधुबाला ने फिल्म संबंधी विवादों के खत्म होने के बाद भी दिलीप कुमार से सुलह की लंबी प्रतीक्षा की। लेकिन जब 1966 में दिलीप ने सायरा से विवाह कर लिया तो बदले की कार्रवाई करते हुए रजत पट की 'वीनस' ने नायक-गायक किशोर कुमार से शादी कर ली, जो उन दिनों दोनों के बीच संदेशवाहक की भूमिका निभा रहे थे।
'नया दौर' (1957) के निर्माण के समय दिलीप मधुबाला के साथ 'मुगल-ए-आजम' कर रहे थे। मधुबाला के पिता को इनके बीच चल रहे प्यार के चक्कर की भनक लग चुकी थी। दर्शकों को याद होगा कि 'नया दौर' की नायिका वैजयंतीमाला थीं। तथ्य यह भी है कि पहले इस फिल्म के लिए मधुबाला को साइन किया था। चोपड़ा ने जब अताउल्लाह को बताया कि फिल्म की शूटिंग भोपाल के निकट बुधनी में होगी तो वे अड़ गए कि शूटिंग मुंबई में ही होनी चाहिए।
उनका कहना था कि अपनी बीमार-सी लड़की को शूटिंग के लिए इतनी दूर नहीं भेज सकते। चोपड़ा ने वैजयंतीमाला को साइन कर लिया और मधुबाला के विरुद्ध कोर्ट में मुकदमा कर दिया। इस प्रकरण में न्याय की खातिर दिलीप कुमार चोपड़ा के पक्ष में खड़े रहे। असली अदावत तो दो पठानों के बीच थी। अताउल्लाह और यूसुफ के बीच। अज्ञात मराठी लड़की से लेकर मधुबाला तक तीनों प्रेम प्रकरणों में दिलीप कुमार ने निष्फल प्रेमी की अपनी फिल्मी छवि को साकार रूप दिया। दिलीप कुमार के जीवन में इस तरह के नाटकीय मोड़ आगे भी आते रहे।
