देविका रानी का जन्म 30 मार्च 1908 को आंध्रप्रदेश में हुआ था। उनके पिता कर्नल एमएन चौधरी ऊंचे बंगाली परिवार से ताल्लुक रखते थे जिन्हें बाद में भारत का प्रथम सर्जन जनरल बनने का गौरव प्राप्त हुआ। 
 
9 वर्ष की उम्र में देविका रानी शिक्षा ग्रहण करने के लिए इंग्लैंड चली गई। पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद देविका रानी ने निश्चय किया कि वह फिल्मों में अभिनय करेगी लेकिन परिवार वाले इस बात के सख्त खिलाफ थे, क्योंकि उन दिनों संभ्रांत परिवार की लड़कियों को फिल्मों में काम नहीं करने दिया जाता था। 
 
इंग्लैंड में कुछ वर्ष रहकर देविका रानी ने रॉयल अकादमी ऑफ ड्रामेटिक आर्ट में अभिनय की विधिवत पढ़ाई की। इसके बाद उन्होंने वास्तुकला में डिप्लोमा भी हासिल किया। इस बीच उनकी मुलाकात बुस्र बुल्फ नामक फिल्म निर्माता से हुई, जो उनकी वास्तुकला की योग्यता से काफी प्रभावित हुए और उन्होंने देविका रानी को अपनी कंपनी में बतौर डिजाइनर नियुक्त कर लिया। 
 
इस बीच उनकी मुलाकात सुप्रसिद्ध निर्माता हिमांशु राय से हुई। हिमांशु राय मैथ्यू अर्नाल्ड की कविता 'लाइट ऑफ एशिया' के आधार पर इसी नाम से एक फिल्म बनाकर अपनी पहचान बना चुके थे। हिमांशु राय, देविका रानी की सुंदरता पर मुग्ध हो गए और उन्होंने देविका रानी को अपनी फिल्म 'कर्म' में काम देने की पेशकश की जिसे देविका ने सहर्ष स्वीकार कर लिया। 
 
यह वह समय था, जब मूक फिल्मों के निर्माण का दौर समाप्त हो रहा था और रूपहले पर्दे पर कलाकार बोलते नजर आ रहे थे। हिमांशु राय ने जब 1933 में फिल्म 'कर्म' का निर्माण किया तो उन्होंने नायक की भूमिका स्वयं निभाई और अभिनेत्री के रूप में देविका रानी का चुनाव किया। 'कर्म' में देविका रानी ने हिमांशु राय के साथ लगभग 4 मिनट तक लिप-टू-लिप दृश्य देकर उस समय के समाज को अंचभित कर दिया। इसके लिए देविका रानी की काफी आलोचना भी हुई और फिल्म को प्रतिबंधित भी किया गया। 
 
इस फिल्म में देविका रानी के फर्राटेदार अंग्रेजी संवाद अदायगी को देखकर लोग हैरान-से रह गए और उनके व्यक्तित्व को देखकर दर्शक इस कदर सम्मोहित हुए कि उनकी गिनती बोलती फिल्मों की श्रेष्ठतम नायिकाओं में होने लगी। हिमांशु राय ने इसके बाद देविका रानी से शादी कर ली और मुंबई आ गए। 
 
मुंबई आने के बाद हिमांशु राय और देविका रानी ने मिलकर बॉम्बे टॉकीज बैनर की स्थापना की और फिल्म 'जवानी की हवा' का निर्माण किया। वर्ष 1935 में प्रदर्शित देविका रानी अभिनीत यह फिल्म सफल रही। 
 
बाद में देविका रानी ने बॉम्बे टॉकीज के बैनर तले बनी कई फिल्मों में अभिनय किया। इन फिल्मों में से एक फिल्म थी 'अछूत कन्या'। वर्ष 1936 में प्रदर्शित 'अछूत कन्या' में देविका रानी ने ग्रामीण बाला की मोहक छवि को रूपहले पर्दे पर साकार किया। फिल्म 'अछूत कन्या' में अपने अभिनय से देविका ने दर्शकों को अपना दीवाना बना दिया। फिल्म में अशोक कुमार एक ब्राह्मण युवक के किरदार में थे जिन्हें एक अछूत लड़की से प्यार हो जाता है। सामाजिक पृष्ठभूमि पर बनी यह फिल्म काफी पसंद की गई और इस फिल्म के बाद देविका रानी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में 'ड्रीमगर्ल' के नाम से मशहूर हो गईं।(वार्ता)
