'मोजार्ट ऑफ मद्रास' के नाम से मशहूर चार बार के नेशनल अवॉर्ड विजेता, संगीतज्ञ एवं गायक ए.आर. रहमान 51 वर्ष के हो चुके हैं। दक्षिण भारत में मद्रास के एक हिन्दू परिवार में जन्मे व पले-बढ़े रहमान को उनके अद्वितीय संगीत व अद्भुत गायन के लिए पूरे विश्व में ख्याति मिली हुई है। तमिल से लेकर हिंदी और फिर हॉलीवुड तक अपनी प्रतिभा का सिक्का जमाने वाले रहमान किसी जमाने में इंजीनियर बनना चाहते थे, पर अब लगता है कि यदि उनकी ये ख्वाहिश पूरी हो जाती तो इस दुनिया को एक महान संगीतज्ञ व गायक से वंचित रहना पड़ता।
6 जनवरी, 1967 में जन्मे रहमान का नाम दिलीप कुमार रखा गया था, हालांकि यह नाम उन्हें कभी भी ज्यादा पसंद नहीं रहा था। दिलीप के पिता आर.के. शेखर तमिल व मलयालम फिल्मों में स्कोर कंपोजर थे, दिलीप भी अपने पिता के म्युजिक स्टूडियो में उनका हाथ बंटाया करते थे।
महज 9 साल की उम्र में उनके सिर से पिता का साया उठ गया था। पिता की मौत के बाद मां ने ही उन्हें पाल-पोस कर बड़ा किया। साल 1984 में बहन की बीमारी के समय उनकी मुलाकात एक सूफी संत कादरी तारिक से हुई। साल 1989 में 23 साल की उम्र में इन्होनें इस्लाम धर्म अपना लिया और एक हिन्दू ज्योतिषी ने इन्हें अल्लाह रखा रहमान नाम दिया।
रहमान साहब से जुड़ी ऐसी कई और बातें भी हैं जिनके बारे में कम ही पढ़ने को मिलता है। आइए ऐसी ही कुछ खास बातों पर एक नजर डालते हैं।
1) बचपन में रहमान दूरदर्शन पर आने वाले एक शो वंडर बैलून में नजर आए थे। जहां उन्हें एक ऐसे लड़के के रूप में ख्याति मिली जो एक साथ चार की-बोर्ड बजा सकता था।
2) रहमान महज 11 साल की उम्र में दक्षिण भारत के जाने-माने संगीत निर्देशक इलियाराजा के साथ जुड़ गए थे। वहां वे की-बोर्ड बजाया करते थे।
3) रहमान ने फिल्मी दुनिया में अपना सफर 1992 में आई फिल्म रोजा से शुरू किया। रहमान के इस साउंडट्रैक को साल 2005 में प्रतिष्ठित अंग्रेजी पत्रिका टाइम ने '10 बेस्ट साउंडट्रैक ऑफ ऑल टाइम' की सूची में शामिल किया है।
4) ए आर रहमान के कई साउंडट्रैक हॉलीवुड फिल्मों में भी इस्तेमाल किए गए हैं। रहमान के मशहूर गाने 'छैया-छैया' को हॉलीवुड फिल्म इनसाइड मैन में शामिल किया गया, साथ ही फिल्म बॉम्बे के म्यूजिक ट्रैक को फिल्म डिवाइन इंटरवेंशन में जगह दी गई।
5) मोबाइल सर्विस प्रोवाइडर कंपनी एयरटेल की मशहूर धुन भी रहमान के द्वारा ही बुनी गई है। आपको जानकर हैरानी होगी कि यह दुनिया में सबसे ज्यादा बार डाउनलोड किए गए मोबाइल ट्रैक में शामिल है। इसे लगभग 150 मिलियन से भी अधिक बार डाउनलोड किया जा चुका है।
6) रहमान साहब के बारे में कहा जाता है कि वे केवल रात के समय ही रिकॉर्डिंग करते हैं। उन्होनें अपनी यह प्रथा केवल सुरों की साम्राज्ञी लता जी के लिए तोड़ते हुए दिन में रिकॉर्डिंग की थी।

7) नवंबर 2013 में सम्मान के तौर पर कनाडाई प्रांत ओंटारियो के शहर मार्खम में एक सड़क का नामकरण ए.आर. रहमान के नाम पर किया गया।
8) अमेज़न के द्वारा दुनिया के 100 सबसे महान म्युजिक एलबम की सूची में रहमान के द्वारा फिल्म लगान में किए गए काम को भी शामिल किया गया है।
9) ए.आर. रहमान पहले ऐसे एशियाई हैं जिन्हें एक ही साल में दो ऑस्कर अवॉर्ड से सम्मानित किया गया है। रहमान को ये ऑस्कर साल 2009 में फिल्म स्लमडॉग मिलियनेयर के गाने जय हो के लिए बेस्ट ओरिजिनल स्कोर और बेस्ट ओरिजिनल सॉन्ग की श्रेणी में मिला है।
10) रहमान दो ऑस्कर, चार नेशनल अवॉर्ड, 15 फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड और 16 फिल्मफेयर अवॉर्ड (साउथ) समेत कुल 131 अवार्ड्स अपने नाम कर चुके हैं। खास बात यह भी है कि रहमान कुल 153 बार किसी अवॉर्ड के लिए नॉमिनेट हुए हैं, जिसमें से 131 बार अवॉर्ड उन्हें ही मिला है।
