मानव इतिहास की शुरुआत जंगलों से हुई थी। इन्हीं जंगलों में इंसान के बहुत से राज़ भी पोशीदा हैं। ये पेड़ और जंगल इंसान को इस हद तक समझते हैं कि उसका भविष्य तक बता सकते हैं।
और इसकी मिसाल हैं जापान के जंगलों में पाए जाने वाले हिनोकी पेड़ जिनमें जापान में बारिश होने का 2600 साल पुराना रिकॉर्ड मौजूद है। अब इन पेड़ों की मदद से पता लगाने की कोशिश की जा रही है कि आने वाले समय में जापान में किस तरह का जलवायु परिवर्तन होगा। उसकी बुनियाद पर हालात से निपटने की रणनीति बनेगी।
ताकेशी नकात्सुका, जापान रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट के रिसर्चर और प्रागैतिहास काल के मौसम के जानकार हैं। वो 68 लोगों की टीम के साथ इस बारे में पिछले एक दशक से रिसर्च कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने 2800 से 3000 साल पुराने पेड़ों के टुकड़े इकट्ठा किए हैं। जिनके छल्लों में छुपे राज़ समझने की कोशिश हो रही है। ताकि ये पता लगाया जा सके कि बीते ज़माने में जापान में कितनी बारिश होती थी।
रिसर्च में पाया गया है कि हर 400 साल में कुछ समय के लिए जापान में बारिश होने का तरीक़ा बदलता है। जिसकी वजह से कई-कई दशक तक देश ने सैलाब या सूखे की मार झेली।
भविष्य की आब-ओ-हवा
और इसी के मुताबिक़ जापानी समाज फला-फूला या बुरे हालात का सामना करता रहा। नकात्सुका कहते हैं कि गुज़रे ज़माने में हुई बारिश और जलवायु परिवर्तन के आधार पर भविष्य की आब-ओ-हवा का अंदाज़ा लगाया जा सकता है। आज का मौसम या जीवनकाल पिछले हज़ार या दो हज़ार साल में बहुत ज़्यादा नहीं बदला है।
इस तरह की रिसर्च के लिए जापान का मध्य इलाक़ा सबसे बेहतरीन जगह है, क्योंकि यहां भारी संख्या में हिनोकी पेड़ मौजूद हैं। नकात्सुका ने यहां से 68 हिनोकी पेड़ों के सैम्पल रिसर्च के लिए जमा किए। ये पेड़ सौ साल से लेकर एक हज़ार साल तक पुराने बताए जाते हैं। अच्छी बात ये है कि नकात्सुका ने रिसर्च के लिए एक नया तरीक़ा ढूंढ निकाला है जिसे आईसोटोप रेशियो कहते हैं। जमा किए गए सैम्पल में ऑक्सीजन आईसोटोप रेशो की जांच की जा रही है।
इसकी बुनियाद पर एक ख़ास दौर के मौसम और माहौल को समझने में मदद मिलती है। नकात्सुका कहते हैं कि इस तरीक़े से उन्हें गर्मी के मौसम में बारिश का अनुमान लगाने में काफ़ी मदद मिली है। रिसर्च से पता चलता है कि बीते 400 सालों में बारिश बहुत अनियमित रही है। ये बदलाव हर कुछ दशक में देखने को मिलता रहा है।
नकात्सुका अपनी रिसर्च में इतिहासकारों और पुरातत्वविदों की मदद भी ले रहे हैं। इतिहासकारों के मुताबिक़ मध्यकालीन जापान में बारिश के लिए बड़े पंडितों या पुरोहितों से पूजा कराई जाती थी। यानी उस दौर में बारिश कम थी। नकात्सुका की रिसर्च भी इसी ओर इशारा करती है। इसी तरह खेती शुरू होने के बाद जिस तरह से पानी संजोने के तरीक़े ढूंढे गए उससे पता चलता है कि उस दौर में बारिश इतनी कम रही होगी कि सूखे के हालात पैदा हो गए होंगे।
सबसे ख़ास बात ये है कि सूखे का ये दौर चीन और जापान में लंबे समय तक दर्ज हुआ है। और उसी के हिसाब ने उस दौर के समाज ने ख़ुद को ढाला। प्रागैतिहासिक काल के पुरातत्वविद और इतिहासकार कुनिहिको वाकाबयाशी का कहना है कि नई रिसर्च सामने आने से पहले तक वो समाज में हो रहे बदलावों को राज्य निर्माण का तरीक़ा मान रहे थे।
लेकिन अब नकात्सुका की रिसर्च से इस बात पर मुहर लगती है कि इन बदलावों की जड़ में सैलाब या सूखा था। मिसाल के लिए 1000 ई।पू से लेकर 350 ई। तक यायोई के काल में ज़्यादातर आबादी योडा नदी के पास बसी थी। भरपूर पानी होने की वजह से यहां लोगों ने चावल की खेती शुरू कर दी। चावल यहां के लोगों का बुनियादी खाना बन गया। लेकिन जैसे-जैसे सैलाब आते थे लोगों दूर जगहों पर जाना शुरू कर देते थे।

बदलाव
हालांकि 100 ई.पू में हालात बदलने लगते थे। तापमान में कमी दर्ज की जाने लगी थी और बारिश में इज़ाफ़ा होने लगा था। लिहाज़ा लोगों ने फिर ऊंचाई वाले इलाक़ों में रहना शुरू कर दिया। पांचवीं सदी में तो बहुत तेज़ी से नई जगहों पर बसावट देखने को मिलती है। इसमें पहाड़ी इलाक़े मुख्य रूप से शामिल हैं। जहां जाकर बड़ी संख्या में लोग बस गए। तीसरी से छठीं सदी तक घाटी में बमुश्किल ही कोई घर बचा था। समाज में तेज़ी से बदलाव आ रहे थे।
मिसाल के लिए धान की फ़सल के रख-रखाव की ज़िम्मेदार स्थानीय मुखिया को दी जाने लगी। जो लोग पहाड़ों में रहने लगे थे वो खेतिहर मज़दूर बन गए। अपनी मेहनत का उन्हें पूरा हिस्सा मिलना बंद हो गया। मैदानों में जिनके पास छोटे ज़मीन के टुकड़े थे वो अलग हो गए और बड़े टुकड़े वाले अलग। और यहीं से समाज में असमानता, अमीर और ग़रीब की रेखा खिंच गई।
सातवीं सदी तक जब बारिश कुछ हद तक कम हुई तो लोगों ने एक बार फिर पहाड़ों से निकल कर मैदानों की तरफ़ आना शुरू किया। यही वो दौर था जब जापान में बौद्ध धर्म अपनी जड़ें मजबूत कर रहा था। और समाज में रहने के तौर तरीक़ों के लिए क़ानून बन रहे थे।
प्राचीन इतिहास को समझने के लिए बहुत ही कम लिखित हस्तलिपियां मौजूद हैं। लेकिन नई रिसर्च से इतिहासकारों को भी प्राचीन जापान और सामाजिक क्रम समझने में मदद मिलेगी। पुराने दस्तावेज़ों से पता चलता है कि आठवीं सदी में तोकूगावा नाम के राजा के ज़माने में जापान की आर्थिक व्यवस्था खेती पर आधारित थी।
किसान, चावल को टैक्स के रूप में अदा करते थे। फिर जापान के केंद्रीय बाज़ार दोजीमा राइस एक्सचेंज में बड़े दलाल इस चावल की बोली लगाते थे। जापान के आर्थिक इतिहासकार यास्यू तकात्सूकी कहते हैं कि टोक्यो और ओसाका शहर में ऐसी मुहरें और पर्चियां मिली हैं, जिनसे पता चलता है कि ओसाका के बाज़ार में कम से कम 1500 किलो चावल की बोली लगती थी।
इन पर्चियों से पता चलता है कि तोकूगावा पीरियड में चावल के दाम में लगातार गिरावट आ रही थी। चावल के बाज़ार में पहले बड़े सौदागर ही शामिल हो सकते थे। लेकिन, बाद में छोटे और मंझोले कारोबारी भी शामिल कर लिए गए।
अच्छे मौसम से ज़्यादा पैदावार
इतिहासकार मानते हैं कि तोकूगावा के ज़माने में आबादी नहीं बढ़ी। जबकि, चावल की पैदावार खूब होती थी। इसीलिए यहां खपत से ज़्यादा चावल ने बाहरी बाज़ार के लिए भी दरवाज़े खोल दिए।
जबकि नकात्सुका का जलवायु डेटा बताता है कि मौसम के अच्छे हालात की वजह से पैदावार ज़्यादा हो रही थी और इसी वजह से चावल की कीमत गिर रही थी। वैसे भी किसी एक ख़ास इलाक़े में ज़्यादा बारिश और सैलाब से चावल की कीमतों पर असर नहीं पड़ता था। चावल की क़ीमत में तभी उतार-चढ़ाव आते थे जब पूरे देश में हालात बिगड़ते थे।
नकात्सुका के मुताबिक़ अगर एक या दो साल के लिए मौसम बदलता है तो लोग सिर्फ़ भगवान का शुक्र अदा करते हैं। लेकिन, अगर एक दशक तक भी मौसम के हालात अच्छे रह जाते हैं, तो लोग ख़ुद को उसके मुताबिक़ ढाल लेते हैं। फिर उसी दिशा में आर्थिक गतिविधियां होने लगती हैं। लोगों के जीवन स्तर में भी बदलाव आता है।
आज नई तकनीक का ज़माना है। अगर कुछ वर्षों के लिए मौसम बिगड़ा भी रहता है तो खाने की कमी नहीं आती। दूसरे देशों से चावल और ज़रूरी अनाज मंगा लिए जाते हैं। लेकिन इंसान इस प्रकृति का हिस्सा है। उसे क़ुदरती तरीक़ों से मिलने वाली चीज़ों की दरकार हमेशा रहती है। जिस तेज़ी से हम प्रकृति के साथ खिलवाड़ कर रहे हैं, उसे देख कर कहा जा सकता है कि इतिहास फिर से खुद को दोहरा सकता है। हमें इतिहास से सबक़ लेना चाहिए। वो इतिहास जो हमें हिनोकी पेड़ों में छिपे राज़ से पता चल रहा है।
