मैंने एक साथ इतनी बड़ी संख्या में जलती चिताएं पहली बार देखीं हैं और एक ही दिन में दिल्ली के तीन श्मशान घाटों में ये दुख और अफ़सोस से भरा मंज़र देखने को मिला। जो लाशें जल रही थीं वो सभी कोरोना वायरस के शिकार थे। शनिवार को मैंने दिल्ली के अस्पतालों में ऑक्सीजन, आईसीयू बेड, वेंटिलेटर और दवाओं से जूझते लोगों को देखा था।
आख़िरी सांस लेने वाले कई लोगों के रिश्तेदारों को आंसू बहाते देखा था। सोमवार को श्मशान घाटों में बुज़ुर्ग, जवान और बच्चों को एक दूसरे से गले लग कर रोते देखा। चिता जलाने के लिए अपनी बारी का इंतज़ार करते लोगों को देखा और जब श्मशान घाट भी छोटा पड़ गया तो खुले मैदान में मेकशिफ्ट श्मशान बनते देखा ताकि आगे आने वाली लाशें जलाई जा सकें।
दिल्ली में इन दिनों रोज़ाना कोविड 19 से मरने वालों की संख्या सरकारी तौर पर 350 से 400 के बीच बताई जा रही है। मैंने तीन शमशान घाटों में केवल कुछ घंटों में 100 से अधिक चिताएं जलती देखीं।
सराय काले ख़ां में रिंग रोड से सटे, ट्रैफिक की भीड़ से दूर एक विद्युत शवदाहगृह है। वहां एक तरफ़, एक साथ कई चिताएं जल रही थीं और दूसरी तरफ़ आते जा रहे शवों के अंतिम संस्कार की तैयारी की जा रही थी। रिश्तेदार, एंबुलेंस वाले और सेवकों की एक भीड़ जमा थी। एक समय में क़रीब 10-12 शव जलाए जा रहे थे।

खुले मैदान में मेकशिफ्ट श्मशान घाट
अंतिम संस्कार कराने के लिए वहां एक ही पंडित मौजूद थे और वो इतने व्यस्त थे कि उनसे बात करना मुश्किल था। मैं जब अपने फ़ोन से वीडियो लेने लगा तो फ़ोन ने गर्मी के मारे काम करना बंद कर दिया। मैं सोच रहा था इतना मज़बूत फ़ोन पांच मिनट में ही गर्म हो गया लेकिन ये पुजारी कब से शोलों के बीच अंतिम संस्कार की क्रियाएं करा रहे होंगे। मैंने उनके क़रीब जाकर पूछा कि हर घंटे कितनी चिताएं जल रही हैं तो उन्होंने मेरी तरफ़ देखे बग़ैर ही कहा, "यहाँ 24 घंटे शव आ रहे हैं, संख्या कैसे याद रखें।"
हर कुछ मिनटों में शव लेकर एक के बाद दूसरी, दूसरी के बाद तीसरी एम्बुलेंस अंदर आ रही थी। मेरा सिर घूमने लगा। मैंने चरमपंथी हमले, हत्याएँ और घटनाओं को कवर किया है लेकिन सामूहिक अंतिम संस्कार पहले नहीं देखा। एक तो चिताओं से निकलती आग की गर्मी, ऊपर से सूरज की गर्मी और फिर सिर से पैर तक पीपीई सुरक्षा में ढके बदन के कारण वहां खड़े रह पाना मुश्किल हो रहा था। शायद मैं भावुक भी हो गया था।
थोड़ी देर तक एक किनारे खड़े रहने के बाद जब मैं वहां से बाहर निकला तो एक महिला रिपोर्टर ने मुझे बताया कि कुछ दूरी पर खुले मैदान में एक मेकशिफ्ट श्मशान घाट बनाया जा रहा है। मैं वहां गया तो देखा कि कई मज़दूर खुले मैदान में चिताओं के लिए 20-25 प्लेटफार्म बना रहे हैं। वहां मौजूद एक व्यक्ति ने कहा कि ये आने वाले दिनों की तैयारी है जब कोविड से मरने वालों की संख्या और भी ज़्यादा बढ़ जायेगी।
लोदी रोड विद्युत शवदाहगृह में भीड़ अधिक थी। चिताएं भी ज़्यादा संख्या में जल रही थीं। वहां काफ़ी संख्या में मरने वालों के परिजन मौजूद थे। मैंने देखा एक ही परिवार के कई लोग एक दूसरे को गले लगा कर रो रहे थे। एंबुलेंस अंदर आ रही थीं और शवों को उतारा जा रहा था। गिनती तो नहीं लेकिन मेरा अंदाज़ा है कि एक साथ 20 से 25 चिताएं जल रही थीं। कई रिश्तेदार पीपीई किट पहन कर आये थे।
ऐसी ही किट पहने एक युवा साइड की एक बेंच पर बैठा था। गुमसुम सा। उसने मुझे बताया कि उसके पिता का सोमवार की सुबह देहांत हो गया। वो कोविड पॉज़िटिव थे। वो वहां पहले पहुँच गया था। उसके भाई पिता के शव को अस्पताल से लेकर आने वाले थे। कुछ ही लम्हे बाद वो रो पड़ा। वहां मौजूद कुछ लोग उसे साहस दिलाने लगे।
वहां मौजूद सभी लोग अपने सगे-संबंधियों को अलविदा कहने आये थे। इसलिए स्वाभाविक था कि इस नाज़ुक मौके पर वो एक दूसरे का दर्द समझ रहे थे।
सीमापुरी शमशान घाट का मंज़र
सीमापुरी का शमशान घाट थोड़ा तंग है लेकिन इसके बावजूद अंदर चिताएं काफ़ी संख्या में जलती नज़र आईं। कुछ प्लेटफार्म पहले से मौजूद थे, कुछ नए बनाये गए थे। अंदर रिश्तेदार शवों को भी खुद ही ला रहे थे और लकड़ियों का इंतज़ाम भी खुद ही कर रहे थे। वहां मुझे बजरंग दल का
एक युवा मिला जो एम्बुलेंस सेवा से जुड़ा है। उसने मुझे बताया कि वो 10 दिनों से लगातार यहाँ अस्पतालों से शवों को लेकर आ रहा है। सिखों की एक संस्था यहाँ हर तरह की सुविधाएं पहुंचाने की पूरी कोशिश कर रही थी लेकिन लोग काफ़ी थे।
एक सरदार जी ने कहा कि पिछले कुछ दिनों से हालत इतनी ख़राब हो गयी है कि अब लोगों से कहना पड़ेगा कि वो अब दूसरे शमशान घाट की तरफ़ जाएँ। वो वहां सेवा में लगे थे। उनका दावा था कि सीमापुरी शमशान घाट में हर रोज़ 100 से अधिक चिताएं जलाई जा रही हैं।
मुस्लिम क़ब्रिस्तानों का क्या हाल
लोदी रोड श्मशान से कुछ दूर मुसलमानों का एक क़ब्रिस्तान है। लेकिन वहां केवल एक ही जनाज़े की नमाज़ हो रही थी। ओखला के बटला हाउस में भी एक क़ब्रिस्तान है। वहां के एक निवासी से फ़ोन पर बात की तो उसने कहा कि पहले वहां तीन-चार लोगों की क़ब्रें खोदी जाती थीं लेकिन अप्रैल के महीने से रोज़ 20 से 25 कब्रें खोदी जा रही हैं। उसने कहा, "कल मैंने खुद ही दो जनाज़े की नमाज़ पढ़ी है।'
आईटीओ पर टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया की इमारत के पीछे एक क़ब्रिस्तान है। इस कब्रिस्तान में मरने वालों के साथ भी भेदभाव देखने को मिला। क़ब्र खोदने का काम करने वाले एक शख्स ने बताया कि कोविड से मरने वालों की क़ब्रें अलग हैं।
वो मुझे वहां ले गया जो क़ब्रिस्तान के एकदम आख़िरी कोने में था। मैंने पूछा कि यहाँ कोविड से मरने कितने लोगों को रोज़ दफ़न किया जाता है तो उसने कहा 20 से 25। लेकिन उस समय वहां जनाज़े की कोई नमाज़ नहीं हो रही थी। उसने कहा
लोग या तो फ़ज़र (सुबह) की नमाज़ के बाद या फिर ईशा (शाम) की नमाज़ के बाद अपने परिजनों को दफ़नाते हैं।
वहां मौजूद एक व्यक्ति ने कहा उनकी माँ का कोविड से सुबह ही देहांत हो गया। उनके भाई अस्पताल गए थे, शव को लाने। उन्होंने कहा कि वो कोविड से संक्रमित होने के 12 दिन बाद चल बसीं।
मैं केवल तीन शमशान घाट ही गया। दिल्ली में दर्जनों श्मशान घाट हैं। कोविड मामलों में उछाल और इससे होने वाली मौतों का सही अंदाज़ा यहाँ आकर होता है। सरकार कोविड से होने वाली मौतों को बहुत कम करके बता रही है यह बात यहां लगातार जलती चिताओं को देखकर समझ में आती है।
