क्या है अधिकमास, कब आता है, जानिए इसका पौराणिक आधार

हिंदू कैलेंडर में हर तीन साल में एक बार एक अतिरिक्त माह का प्राकट्य होता है, जिसे अधिकमास, मल मास या पुरुषोत्तम मास के नाम से जाना जाता है। हिंदू धर्म में इस माह का विशेष महत्व है। संपूर्ण भारत की हिंदू धर्मपरायण जनता इस पूरे मास में पूजा-पाठ, भगवतभक्ति, व्रत-उपवास, जप और योग आदि धार्मिक कार्यों में संलग्न रहती है।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि अधिकमास में किए गए धार्मिक कार्यों का किसी भी अन्य माह में किए गए पूजा-पाठ से 10 गुना अधिक फल मिलता है। यही वजह है कि श्रद्धालु जन अपनी पूरी श्रद्धा और शक्ति के साथ इस मास में भगवान को प्रसन्न कर अपना इहलोक तथा परलोक सुधारने में जुट जाते हैं। अब सोचने वाली बात यह है कि यदि यह माह इतना ही प्रभावशाली और पवित्र है, तो यह हर तीन साल में क्यों आता है? आखिर क्यों और किस कारण से इसे इतना पवित्र माना जाता है? इस एक माह को तीन विशिष्ट नामों से क्यों पुकारा जाता है? इसी तरह के तमाम प्रश्न स्वाभाविक रूप से हर जिज्ञासु के मन में आते हैं। तो आज ऐसे ही कई प्रश्नों के उत्तर और अधिकमास को गहराई से जानते हैं-

हर तीन साल में क्यों आता है

अधिकमास- वशिष्ठ सिद्धांत के अनुसार भारतीय हिंदू कैलेंडर सूर्य मास और चंद्र मास की गणना के अनुसार चलता है। अधिकमास चंद्र वर्ष का एक अतिरिक्त भाग है, जो हर 32 माह, 16 दिन और 8 घटी के अंतर से आता है। इसका प्राकट्य सूर्य वर्ष और चंद्र वर्ष के बीच अंतर का संतुलन बनाने के लिए होता है। भारतीय गणना पद्धति के अनुसार प्रत्येक सूर्य वर्ष 365 दिन और करीब 6 घंटे का होता है, वहीं चंद्र वर्ष 354 दिनों का माना जाता है। दोनों वर्षों के बीच लगभग 11 दिनों का अंतर होता है, जो हर तीन वर्ष में लगभग 1 मास के बराबर हो जाता है। इसी अंतर को पाटने के लिए हर तीन साल में एक चंद्र मास अस्तित्व में आता है, जिसे अतिरिक्त होने के कारण अधिकमास का नाम दिया गया है।

मल मास क्यों कहा गया

हिंदू धर्म में अधिकमास के दौरान सभी पवित्र कर्म वर्जित माने गए हैं। माना जाता है कि अतिरिक्त होने के कारण यह मास मलिन होता है। इसलिए इस मास के दौरान हिंदू धर्म के विशिष्ट व्यक्तिगत संस्कार जैसे नामकरण, यज्ञोपवीत, विवाह और सामान्य धार्मिक संस्कार जैसे गृहप्रवेश, नई बहुमूल्य वस्तुओं की खरीदी आदि आमतौर पर नहीं किए जाते हैं। मलिन मानने के कारण ही इस मास का नाम मल मास पड़ गया है।

पुरुषोत्तम मास नाम क्यों

अधिकमास के अधिपति स्वामी भगवान विष्णु माने जाते हैं। पुरुषोत्तम भगवान विष्णु का ही एक नाम है। इसीलिए अधिकमास को पुरूषोत्तम मास के नाम से भी पुकारा जाता है। इस विषय में एक बड़ी ही रोचक कथा पुराणों में पढ़ने को मिलती है। कहा जाता है कि भारतीय मनीषियों ने अपनी गणना पद्धति से हर चंद्र मास के लिए एक देवता निर्धारित किए। चूंकि अधिकमास सूर्य और चंद्र मास के बीच संतुलन बनाने के लिए प्रकट हुआ, तो इस अतिरिक्त मास का अधिपति बनने के लिए कोई देवता तैयार ना हुआ। ऐसे में ऋषि-मुनियों ने भगवान विष्णु से आग्रह किया कि वे ही इस मास का भार अपने ऊपर लें। भगवान विष्णु ने इस आग्रह को स्वीकार कर लिया और इस तरह यह मल मास के साथ पुरुषोत्तम मास भी बन गया।

अधिकमास का पौराणिक आधार

अधिक मास के लिए पुराणों में बड़ी ही सुंदर कथा सुनने को मिलती है। यह कथा दैत्यराज हिरण्यकश्यप के वध से जुड़ी है। पुराणों के अनुसार दैत्यराज हिरण्यकश्यप ने एक बार ब्रह्मा जी को अपने कठोर तप से प्रसन्न कर लिया और उनसे अमरता का वरदान मांगा। चुंकि अमरता का वरदान देना निषिद्ध है, इसीलिए ब्रह्मा जी ने उसे कोई भी अन्य वर मांगने को कहा।

तब हिरण्यकश्यप ने वर मांगा कि उसे संसार का कोई नर, नारी, पशु, देवता या असुर मार ना सके। वह वर्ष के 12 महीनों में मृत्यु को प्राप्त ना हो। जब वह मरे, तो ना दिन का समय हो, ना रात का। वह ना किसी अस्त्र से मरे, ना किसी शस्त्र से। उसे ना घर में मारा जा सके, ना ही घर से बाहर मारा जा सके। इस वरदान के मिलते ही हिरण्यकश्यप स्वयं को अमर मानने लगा और उसने खुद को भगवान घोषित कर दिया। समय आने पर भगवान विष्णु ने अधिक मास में नरसिंह अवतार यानि आधा पुरुष और आधे शेर के रूप में प्रकट होकर, शाम के समय, देहरी के नीचे अपने नाखूनों से हिरण्यकश्यप का सीना चीन कर उसे मृत्यु के द्वार भेज दिया।   

इसका महत्व क्यों है?

हिंदू धर्म के अनुसार प्रत्येक जीव पंचमहाभूतों से मिलकर बना है। इन पंचमहाभूतों में जल, अग्नि, आकाश, वायु और पृथ्वी सम्मिलित हैं। अपनी प्रकृति के अनुरूप ही ये पांचों तत्व प्रत्येक जीव की प्रकृति न्यूनाधिक रूप से निश्चित करते हैं। अधिकमास में समस्त धार्मिक कृत्यों, चिंतन- मनन, ध्यान, योग आदि के माध्यम से साधक अपने शरीर में समाहित इन पांचों तत्वों में संतुलन स्थापित करने का प्रयास करता है। इस पूरे मास में अपने धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक प्रयासों से प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपनी भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक उन्नति और निर्मलता के लिए उद्यत होता है। इस तरह अधिकमास के दौरान किए गए प्रयासों से व्यक्ति हर तीन साल में स्वयं को बाहर से स्वच्छ कर परम निर्मलता को प्राप्त कर नई उर्जा से भर जाता है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस दौरान किए गए प्रयासों से समस्त कुंडली दोषों का भी निराकरण हो जाता है।

अधिकमास में क्या करना उचित

आमतौर पर अधिकमास में हिंदू श्रद्धालु व्रत- उपवास, पूजा- पाठ, ध्यान, भजन, कीर्तन, मनन को अपनी जीवनचर्या बनाते हैं। पौराणिक सिद्धांतों के अनुसार इस मास के दौरान यज्ञ- हवन के अलावा श्रीमद् देवीभागवत, श्री भागवत पुराण, श्री विष्णु पुराण, भविष्योत्तर पुराण आदि का श्रवण, पठन, मनन विशेष रूप से फलदायी होता है। अधिकमास के अधिष्ठाता भगवान विष्णु हैं, इसीलिए इस पूरे समय में विष्णु मंत्रों का जाप विशेष लाभकारी होता है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि अधिक मास में विष्णु मंत्र का जाप करने वाले साधकों को भगवान विष्णु स्वयं आशीर्वाद देते हैं, उनके पापों का शमन करते हैं और उनकी समस्त इच्छाएं पूरी करते हैं।
