भारत की हवा इसके आसपास के दक्षिण एशियाई देशों की हवा से थोड़ी अलग है। ऐसा इसलिए, क्योंकि भारत की हवा में फ़ॉर्मलडिहाइड मौजूद है। ऐसी रंगहीन गैस, जो वैसे तो प्राकृतिक तौर पर पेड़-पौधों और अन्य वनस्पतियों के ज़रिए छोड़ी जाती है लेकिन इसके साथ-साथ प्रदूषण फ़ैलाने वाली गतिविधियों के कारण भी यह गैस पैदा होती है।
यूरोप के नए उपग्रह सेंटनल-5पी ने भारत के ऊपर मौजूद वायुमंडल में इस गैस की बढ़ी हुई मात्रा का पता लगाया है। सेंटनल-5पी उपग्रह को पिछले साल अक्तूबर में दुनिया भर में हवा की गुणवत्ता पर नज़र रखने के लिए लॉन्च किया गया था। इससे जुटाई गई जानकारियों के आधार पर वायुमंडल को साफ़ रखने के लिए नीतियां बनाने में मदद मिलेगी।
क्या है फ़ार्मलडिहाइड
वायमुंडल में नाइट्रोजन और ऑक्सिजन जैसे अहम घटकों की तुलना में फ़ॉर्मलडिहाइड (CH₂O ) का सिग्नल बहुत कमज़ोर होता है। हवा के एक अरब अणुओं में CH₂O के कुछ ही अणु होंगे। मगर रॉयल बेल्जियन इंस्टिट्यूट फ़ॉर स्पेस एरोनमी (BIRA-IASB) से जुड़ीं इज़ाबेल डि स्मेट कहती हैं कि फिर भी इससे प्रदूषण से जुड़े संकेत मिल सकते हैं।
उन्होंने बीबीसी को बताया, "फ़ॉर्मलडिहाइड में कई तरह के अस्थिर जैविक यौगिक होते हैं। वनस्पति उनका प्राकृतिक स्रोत है मगर आग या प्रदूषण के कारण भी उनकी मात्रा बढ़ सकती है।"
"वैसे तो यह बात इलाक़े के ऊपर निर्भर करती है मगर 50 से 80 प्रतिशत सिग्नल जीव जनित स्रोतों से आते हैं। अगर सिग्नल इससे ज़्यादा आया तो ऐसा प्रदूषण और आग के कारण ही होगा। कोयला जलाने या जंगल की आग के कारण ऐसा हो सकता है मगर भारत में खेतों में भी बहुत ज़्यादा आग लगाई जाती है।"
भारत में घर पर खाना बनाने और गर्माहट आदि के लिए अभी भी ठीक-ठाक मात्रा में लकड़ी जलाई जाती है।
क्या है ख़तरा
अस्थिर जैविक यौगिक जब जीवाश्म ईंधनों के जलने से पैदा होने वाली नाइट्रोजन डाइऑक्साइड और सूरज की रोशनी के संपर्क में आते हैं तो प्रतिक्रिया होती है और इससे ग्राउंड लेवल ओज़ोन बनती है। ग्राउंड लेवल ओज़ोन सांस लेने में गंभीर दिक्कत पैदा करती है और इससे कई स्वास्थ्य संबंधित समस्याएं हो सकती हैं।

ऊपर पहली तस्वीर देखें तो पता चलता है कि कैसे हिमालय पर्वत मैदानी हिस्से की हवा को उत्तर में जाने से रोकता है। नक्शे में उत्तर पश्चिम भारत में जहां पर फ़ॉर्मलडिहाइड का घनत्व कम दिख रहा है, वह राजस्थान की मरुभूमि है जहां वनस्पति भी कम है और आबादी भी।
कितना कारगर है सेनिटल-5पी
सेनिटल-5पी (S5P) को यूरोपियन स्पेस एजेंसी ने यूरोपियन यूनियन के कॉपरनिकस अर्थ-मॉनिटरिंग कार्यक्रम के लिए लॉन्च किया था। इस सेटेलाइट में लगा ट्रोपोमी उपकरण वायुमंडल में फ़ॉर्मलडिहाइड के अलावा नाइट्रोजन ऑक्साइड, ओज़ोन, सल्फ़र डाइऑक्साइड, मीथेन, कार्बन मोनॉक्साइड और एरोसोल्स (छोटे वाष्प या कण) के अंशों का पता लगा सकता है।
ये सभी उस हवा को प्रभावित करते हैं, जिसे हम सांस से ग्रहण करते हैं। इनमें से कई तो जलवायु परिवर्तन के लिए भी ज़िम्मेदार हैं। ट्रोपोमी उपकरण अपने पूर्ववर्ती सिस्टम 'ओमी' से बेहतर है। ओमी अभी भी काम कर रहा है और अमरीकी स्पेस एजेंसी के एक उपग्रह के साथ धरती के चक्कर काट रहा है।
डॉक्टर डी स्मेट कहती हैं, "हमारे पास पहले से अच्छा डेटा था मगर इस स्तर की जानकारियां इकट्ठा करने के लिए हमें कई दिनों तक नज़र रखनी पड़ती थी। कई बार तो कई सालों तक।"
वह बताती हैं, "भारत के नए नक्शे में चार महीने का डेटा है। ट्रोपोमी एक महीने में वह सब कर सकता है, जिसे करने में ओमी को छह महीने लगते हैं।"
"अब हमें तेज़ी से जानकारियां मिलती हैं। हम छोटे स्तर पर होने वाले उत्सर्जन पर भी नज़र रख सकते हैं। ऐसे संकेत पहले अच्छी तरह नहीं दिखते थे। उदाहरण के लिए हमें तेहरान में उत्सर्जन देखने के लिए 10 साल के डेटा की ज़रूरत पड़ी। लेकिन इस नक्शे में आप सिर्फ चार महीने का ट्रोपोमी डेटा देख पा रहे हैं।"
एक टेस्ट के बाद S5P पूरी तरह काम करने लगेगा और महीने के आखिर तक नाइट्रोजन ऑक्साइड और कार्बन मोनॉक्साइड का डेटा भी जुटाने लगेगा। नतीजे आने के लिए हमें सर्दियों तक का इंतज़ार करना होगा।
