मंगल ग्रह पर नासा का मंगल मिशन 1960 से जारी है। 61 साल में नासा ने अब तक करीब 58 मिशन मंगल ग्रह पर भेजे जा चुके हैं जिसमें से 31 ही सफल हो पाएंगे हैं। नासा ने 6 अगस्त 1996 में मंगल पर जीवन होने की संभावना जताई थी। इसके बाद लगातार वहां पर जीवन होने की संभावना व्यक्त की जाती रही है।
नासा ने फोबोस के बाद 1996 में पाथ फाइंडर, सोजॉर्नर और 2011-12 में क्यूरियोसिटी रोवर भेजा था जो अब तक काम कर रहा है। इस साल अमेरिका और चीन के रोवर मंगल की सतह पर उतरेंगे। इसके अलावा 2023 में मंगल ग्रह पर रोसेलिंड फ्रैंकलिन रोवर उतारा जाएगा। हाल ही में नासा के स्पेसक्राफ्ट मार्स रिकॉनसेंस ऑर्बिटर ने कई जाता तस्वीरें भेजकर इस अनुमान को और भी पुष्ट कर दिया है कि मंगल पर कभी जीवन रहा होगा और आज भी वहां जीवन जिने की संभावना है।
स्पेसक्राफ्ट मार्स रिकॉनसेंस ऑर्बिटर ने मंगल ग्रह पर जमी 'बर्फ की परतों' की तस्वीरें भेजकर सभी को चौंका दिया है। नासा ने ये तस्वीरें अपने ट्वीटर हैंडल पर पोस्ट की है। इससे पहले नासा के पर्सिवियरेंस रोवर और इंजेनुइटी ने हैरतअंगेज़ तस्वीरें भेजी थी जिसमें मंगल ग्रह के पहाड़ और पत्थर स्पष्ट दिखाई दे रहे हैं साथ ही पथरिली भूमि का रंग भी नजर आ रहा है। इंजेनुइटी ने मंगल की सतह से उड़ान भरकर जहां पर्सिवियरेंस रोवर की तस्वीरें ली वहीं उसने कई अन्य तस्वीरें भी ली। यह तस्वीरें रंगीन है। इंजेनुइटी एक मिनी-हेलीकॉप्टर रोवर है।
मंगल ग्रह पर नासा के हेलिकॉप्टर की सफल उड़ान के साथ ही इसके साथ ही करीब 6 सालों से चली आ रही अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा की मेहनत आज कामयाब हो गई है। अंतरिक्ष इतिहास में ऐसा पहली बार हुआ है जब किसी दूसरे ग्रह पर किसी हेलिकॉप्टर ने उड़ान भरी हो।

हालांकि इस बार मंगल ग्रह के चारों तरफ चक्कर लगा रहे स्पेसक्राफ्ट मार्स रिकॉनसेंस ऑर्बिटर ने मंगल के बर्फिले क्षेत्र की रंगीन तस्वीरें भेजकर सभी को चौंका दिया। इन तस्वीरों में मंगल ग्रह के दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर बड़ी-बड़ी बर्फीली झीलें दिखाई दे रही हैं। इन तस्वीरों की जांच करने के बाद नासा के जेट प्रोपल्शन लेबोरेटरी के वैज्ञानिक भी अंचभित रह गए हैं।
नासा ने अपनी साइट पर लिखा है कि जहां पर पानी होता है, वहां पर जीवन होता है। लेकिन यह सिद्धांत सिर्फ धरती पर ही लागू हो रहा है। इसलिए हमारे वैज्ञानिक मंगल ग्रह की सूखी जमीन पर तरल पानी की खोज कर रहे हैं। हालांकि लाल ग्रह पर पानी की खोज करना इतना आसान नहीं है। दूर से देखने और तस्वीरों की जांच करने पर पता चलता है कि मंगल ग्रह के दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर बहुतायत में बर्फ है।
इससे पहले साल 2018 में इटली के नेशनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ एस्ट्रोफिजिक्स के साइंटिस्ट रॉबर्टो ओरोसेई ने मंगल ग्रह के दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर सतह की नीचे बर्फीली झीलें खोजी थी। उन्होंने इसके सबूत यूरोपियन स्पेस एजेंसी के मार्स एक्सप्रेस ऑर्बिटर से जुटाए थे। जब बारीकी से इन तस्वीरों और राडार सिग्नलों की जांच की तो पता चला कि ये चिकनी मिट्टी भी हो सकती है। नए रिसर्च पेपर्स में अब यह दावा किया गया है कि मंगल ग्रह पर मौजूद झीलों को सुखाने में चिकनी मिट्टी का भी बड़ा योगदान हो सकता है।
गौरतलब है कि वर्ष 2015 में मार्स रिकॉनसेंस ऑर्बिटर ने मंगल ग्रह के ऊंचे पहाड़ों से गीली रेत को फिसलते और अपना आकार बदलते देखा था। तब यह अनुमान लगाया गया था कि शायद पानी के बहाव के कारण ऐसा हो रहा है, लेकिन जब हाई रेजोल्यूशन इमेजिंग साइंस एक्सपेरीमेंट के जरिए जांच की गई तो खुलासा हुआ कि वह सूखी रेत है, जो अपना आकार लगातार तेज हवा के कारण बदलती है। इसके अलावा मंगल ग्रह पर तरल पानी की संभावनाओं को इसलिए भी खारिज किया जा रहा है क्योंकि मंगल ग्रह पर इतनी ज्यादा ठंड है कि वहां पर पानी तरल रूप में रह ही नहीं सकता। यह स्टडी जियोफिजिकल रिसर्च लेटर्स में प्रकाशित हुई थी।
उल्लेखनीय है कि भारत के 'मंगलयान मिशन' ने भी इस दिशा में कई उपलब्धियां प्राप्त की है। भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन (इसरो) के मंगलयान (मार्स ऑर्बिटर मिशन) में लगे 'मार्स कलर कैमरा' (एमसीसी) ने मंगल के सबसे बड़े चंद्रमा 'फोबोस' की तस्वीर ली है। इस तस्वीर में अतीत में फोबोस से आकाशीय पिंडों के टकराने से बने विशाल गड्ढे (क्रेटर) भी दिख रहे हैं। ये हैं स्लोवास्की, रोश और ग्रिलड्रिग। मंगलयान द्वारा ली गई मंगल ग्रह की एक तस्वीर को प्रसिद्ध अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पत्रिका नेशनल नेशनल जियोग्राफिक मैगज़ीन ने कवर फोटो बनाया है।
