अपने ओडिशा दौरे के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने एक आम चायवाले, डी. प्रकाश राव को मिलने के लिये बुलाया। मोदी ने 26 मई को उनसे तकरीबन 20 मिनट तक मुलाक़ात की और बाद में 27 तारीख़ को रेडियो पर प्रसारित किए जाने वाले अपने मासिक कार्यक्रम 'मन की बात' में उनके काम का ज़िक्र भी किया।
मोदी ने डीए प्रकाश राव के काम की सराहना करते हुए उनकी ज़िन्दगी को समाज और देश के लिये प्रेरणादायक बताया। उन्होंने कहा, "ऐसे कुछ ही लोग हैं जो अपना सब कुछ त्याग कर दूसरों के हित और समाज के हित के लिए सोचते हैं।"
मोदी ने क्यों किया चायवाले का ज़िक्र?
ओडिशा की राजधानी से करीब 30 किलोमीटर दूर बसे शहर कटक में सड़क के किनारे बसी एक झोपड़पट्टी में 61 साल के डी. प्रकाश राव रहते हैं। कभी कॉलेज में कदम ना रखने वाले प्रकाश राव अच्छी हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी बोल लेते हैं।
बीते लगभग 50 सालों से वो चाय बेचते आ रहे हैं। लेकिन उनके लिए चाय बेचना अपनी कमाई का ज़रिया नहीं है बल्कि ग़रीब बच्चों को पढ़ाई में मदद करने का ज़रिया है। 18 साल पहले डी. प्रकाश राव ने अपनी कमाई से आशा आश्वासन नाम का एक स्कूल खोला था जहां उन्होंने ग़रीब बच्चों को पढ़ाना शुरु किया। आज उनके स्कूल में कुल 75 बच्चे पढ़ रहे हैं।

प्रकाश राव बताते हैं कि ग़रीबी के कारण वो कॉलेज की पढ़ाई नहीं कर सके थे। वो कहते हैं, "इसलिए मैंने फैसला किया कि ग़रीब बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए कोशिश करूंगा।" उन्होंने बताया, "मैं एक दिन में करीब 700 रुपये तक रोज़गार कर लेता हूं। और इसमें से अधिकतर पैसा मैं स्कूल चलाने में खर्च करता हूं।"
हाल में प्रकाश राव ने अपने स्कूल में 6 टीचरों को नियुक्त किया है। वो हर दिन बच्चों को 100 मिलीलीटर दूध और 2 बिस्कुट सुबह के नास्ते के तौर पर देते हैं। बच्चों के लिए दोपहर के खाने में वो दाल और चावल की भी व्यवस्था करते हैं।
स्कूल में हर तरह के बच्चे
प्रकाश राव का स्कूल कटक के भीड़भाड़ वाले बक्सी बज़ार इलाके के नज़दीक तेलूगु झोपड़पड्डी में है। उनकी बस्ती में रहने वाले अधिकतर लोग शहर में साफ़ सफ़ाई का काम करते हैं। वो अपने स्कूल में भीख मांग रहे, चोरी करते हुए पकड़े गए और नशे के चुंगल में फंसे या फिर बाल मज़दूरी में फंसे बच्चों को दाखिला देते हैं।

प्रकाश राव बताते हैं, "पहले उनमें से कुछ बच्चों के माता-पिता मेरे ख़िलाफ़ बोलते थे और अपने बच्चों को स्कूल से निकाल कर मजदूरी करवाने ले जाते थे।" वो बताते हैं कि अब स्थिति में काफी सुधार आया है और कई बच्चों के माता-पिता अपने बच्चों के भविष्य को लेकर संजीदा हो रहे हैं। प्रकाश राव के पास संपत्ति के नाम पर एक साइकिल है। लेकिन उनका कहना है, "इस वजह से मैंने कभी स्कूल बन्द करने के बारे में नहीं सोचा।"
पहले लगा कोई मज़ाक कर रहा है
25 मई को डी. प्रकाश राव के पास प्रधानमन्त्री कार्यालय से फ़ोन आया। प्रकाश राव बताते, "मुझे विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि प्रधानमन्त्री मुझसे मिलना चाहते हैं। मुझे लगा कोई झूठ बोल कर मेरे साथ मज़ाक कर रहा है।" "लेकिन फिर बाद में कलेक्टर ऑफ़िस से फ़ोन आया तो लगा कि असल में मोदी जी ने मिलने के लिए बुलाया है। मैं अपने स्कूल के कुछ बच्चों के साथ उनसे मिलने गया था।"
प्रकाश राव ने बताया, "मोदी जी ने मुझे अपने पास सोफे पर बैठने को कहा। मना करने पर उन्होंने सोफ़े को झाड़ते हुए मुझे कहा कि आप मेरे पास बैठें। उन्होंने मुझसे कहा कि मैं आपके बारे में सब जानता हूं। मुझे आश्चर्य है कि आप इतना सब कैसे कर लेते हैं।" "उन्होंने बच्चों को गीत गाने के लिए कहा जिस पर बच्चों ने उन्हें एक पुराने ओड़िया फ़िल्म का गीत सुनाया।"
"उनके साथ बात करते वक्त लग रहा था जैसे मैं किसी दूसरी दुनिया में हूं।" प्रकाश राव कहते हैं कि उन्होंने अपने शरीर के अंग पहले ही मेडिकल कॉलेज में डोनेट कर दिया है। वो कहते हैं, "बस मैं ना रहूं तो ये काम हो जाए।"
